NUFC loanees end season in style with yet another goal & shock place in Championship play-offs

Our Premier League season may have completely fizzled out over the past fortnight, but it was a very interesting night of Championship football for two of our top performing loanees last night.

Jacob Murphy bagged his 9th goal of the season for Sheffield Wednesday in a final day defeat to Middlesbrough, leaving Owls fans gutted to see him heading back to St James’ Park.

You may find it hard to believe given how poorly his spell in South Yorkshire started, but his involvement in 15 goals and superb performances over the second half of the season (he’s scored 5 and assisted 5 in his last 13 appearances) have them desperate to sign him on a permanent deal.

Elsewhere, fellow loanee Freddie Woodman may have been sidelined for Swansea’s trip to Reading, however his new club pulled off one of the results of the night to secure an unlikely spot in the play offs.

They started the night in 7th and three points behind Nottingham Forest. Swansea not only needed to win, but to also see Forest lose and a huge swing in goal difference to follow in their favour – and that’s exactly what happened, with them winning 1-4 at Reading and the Reds losing 1-4 at home to a struggling Stoke side!

As a result, Woodman – who has kept 12 clean sheets this season – will see his side face Brentford in the Championship play-off semi finals in a bid to take Swansea back to the top flight.

It remains to be seen if he’ll be fit enough to feature after a recent injury, however it looks like both he and Jacob Murphy will be targets for Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday respectively this summer after impressive stints away from St James’ Park.
