Bruce drops new transfer hint – A few deals lined up despite Saudi takeover uncertainty?

Steve Bruce has insists that Newcastle United ARE in a position to sign players when the transfer window opens on Monday, saying uncertainty over a potential Saudi takeover will not stop them.

The NUFC boss has also hinted that the club have “one or two” deals in the pipeline that they’re hoping to push through when the window opens next week, but does admit that we have competition.

Here’s what he’s had to say at this morning’s press conference, speaking about our search to improve the squad AND find ‘value for money’ following the COVID-19 crisis:

“When I say business as usual, we’ve got one or two things in the fire right now.

“In terms of planning and the way forward, and who we’re hoping to bring in, we’ve got one or two things up our sleeve that we’re trying to do.

“So, we haven’t been restricted, in that respect.”

“Let’s hope we can pull them off. We’ve got competition.”

“As soon as it opens, we’ll go to work

“My job is to keep knocking on the door and asking the question.

“I really want us to improve and get better.

“We need to improve the squad but also ensure we get value for money.”

“We have to cut our cloth accordingly”.

It’s at least positive to hear the club won’t be unable to do any business come Monday, however it seems quite clear that Mike Ashley won’t be spending big.

The fact a Saudi takeover could yet be approved will no doubt play a part (although who knows what arrangement has been made between the two parties heading into the window), but it seems we’ll also have to spend wisely after feeling the after effects of COVID-19.

On that subject, recently released Nice midfielder Arnaud Lusamba feels like one to watch after The Chronicle have regularly highlighted that we’ve been in talks to sign the Frenchman on a free, with this seeming like the sort of bargain deal we’ll be after given Bruce wants ‘four or five’ and to sign a goal scorer – and they don’t come cheap!

With the new season set to arrive so soon and the transfer window likely to be over in a flash if we don’t act quickly, let’s hope our recruitment team have unearthed some gems.

After all, it feels like we’ll be swapping ‘£40m moves’ for free agents and bargain buys until there’s some sort of decision on a Saudi takeover.
