The transfer window is officially open and Steve Bruce’s latest comments on potential incomings provide plenty food for thought.
“I’m sure there will be a lot of names bandied about, but we’ve got one or two in the pipeline which I’ll be delighted with if we can pull them off to start the summer. Watch this space.”
The ‘watch this space’ quote was particularly interesting, especially when asked if we would be ready to make a quick signing in the forthcoming window.
That said, Bruce is also aware that we will be handed a lower transfer kitty than in recent summers and tempers enthusiasm after his initial optimism by stating how ‘good value for money’ will be key in the current climate:
“I think there will be a big reality check across the board in terms of what has just happened. Not just in football, the world. So, we have to make sure we box clever and make sure we get good value for money. We have to make sure we can improve the squad.”
Therein then lies the conundrum. How can he do that as with £30m to spend and in his own words needing to strengthen all-over what kind of quality of signing can we expect? Seems to me that the, out of contracts, loanees and bargain buys are what’s in the space.
As I have speculated before, I still think Arnaud Lusamba – a talented young Frenchman who’s been released by Nice – could be one we’re hoping to tie up this week. He looks like he could improve the squad and will be able for just wages. So, he could be one of the “two.”
As for the other one? Who knows? But we may well be in the market for sealing that space with individuals who have perhaps been relegated but believe they are good enough to stay in the division they’ve left or someone else from Europe that’s suffered a relegation.
“Watch this space” indeed and let’s hope those that come can not only fill the space they can make it look better as well.
