NUFC Blog’s 2019/20 awards – Player of the season, unsung hero, most improved, best goal & more

Well, that’s it folks. The 2019/20 season is finally over.

It’s not been easy on the eye and it’s ended just as flatly as it began in that home defeat to Arsenal way back in August last year, however there’s been the odd high along the way and a few standout performers who’ve our latest survival season that bit more bearable!

We’re already looking ahead to the next season with Newcastle facing a battle to finish in the top 10, and you can get a Football Index referral code to bet on the upcoming season.

But for now, here are a few end of season awards, from player of the year, to unsung hero, most improved, best goal and more:

Player of the season:

  1. Martin Dubravka
  2. Allan Saint-Maximin

The Slovakian has been absolutely outstanding, keeping us in several games, making more saves than any other Premier League and being a constant calming influence at the back. He may have made the odd mistake, but so many of our narrow early season wins (or draws!) were only made possible from him keeping us in the game. I think it’s safe to say we’d be in the bottom three without him.

An honourable mention must also go to Allan Saint-Maximin, who would be just as worthy of the award. A breath of fresh air on and off the pitch, a player we’ve barely ever won without and an explosive attacker who’s regularly been by far our biggest threat. Like Dubravka, I dread to think where we’d be without him!

Young player of the season:

  1. Allan Saint-Maximin
  2. Matty Longstaff
  3. Tom Allan

It has to be ASM. His numbers in terms of goals and assists are far from spectacular, but his influence on the team has been huge, with us winning more, losing less, scoring more and conceding less when he starts.

Matty Longstaff comes in a close second after a brilliant breakthrough year, although that may mean little if he leaves for a few thousand, while Tom Allan also deserves a mention after bagging an assist on his senior debut vs Rochdale following an impressive campaign at U-23 level saw him get into double figures.

Unsung hero:

  1. Isaac Hayden
  2. Ciaran Clark / Federico Fernandez
  3. Jonjo Shelvey

Hayden may not always get the plaudits he deserves, but perhaps the best tribute we can pay to him is that we don’t half miss him when he’s not there. Fully committed, consistent and someone whose….

Clark started the season our SIXTH choice centre-back, yet he’s quickly become arguably Steve Bruce’s most reliable option this season when he was fit, putting his body on the line at one end and scoring a few key goals at the other end. He missed the last few months of the season, but he never let us down when he played! Like him, fellow centre-back Fernandez is another who isn’t flashy but barely puts a foot wrong.

Jonjo Shelvey also deserves praise for adding a few goals to his game and enjoying the slight bit more freedom he’s been given under Bruce, with his six strikes seeing him end our top scorer in the league.

Most improved player:

  1. Miguel Almiron
  2. Javier Manquillo
  3. Matty Longstaff

Matty may be the obvious player given he’s gone from U-23 prospect to securing a place in Bruce’s Premier League squad, but I feel it has to go to Miguel Almiron, with the Paraguayan ending the season as our top scorer in all competitions (8) after adding goals to his game following a difficult start to the season.

As for Javier Manquillo, the Spaniard is arguably our best right-back as things stand and turned things around brilliantly to earn himself a new contract at the club. Matty Longstaff also deserves praise for going from U-23 talent to a member of Bruce’s senior squad and rarely looking out of his depth when he’s been handed a chance.

Disappointment of the season:

  1. Joelinton
  2. Andy Carroll
  3. Sean Longstaff

It has to be Joelinton. He was never prolific in Germany and signed as a young prospect, not a proven scorer, but we all expected much more from our £40m man. Two goals and several unconvincing displays have left so many of us scratching our head – even if he hasn’t always been used right.

Elsewhere, Andy Carroll has not only struggled to stay fit but hasn’t made enough of an impact when he’s featured, failing to score all season on his second stint at SJP.

Then to Sean Longstaff. He’s had to odd good game when played in a more advanced role in 2020, however he has generally struggled to get anywhere near that form that saw him linked with a big money move to Man Utd this time last year!

Moment of the season:

https://twitter.com/cwrsmith2/status/1180980896775753728
  1. Matty Longstaff’s debut goal vs Man Utd
  2. Miguel Almiron breaking his duck at the Gallowgate
  3. Saint-Maximin’s winner at Oxford

The ovation Carroll received on his ‘second debut’ was also a spine tingling moment, but these are the three top moments for me. Three goals that sparked incredible scenes and a rare moment of unrivalled joy in a season that generally lacked emotion and entertainment value.

Goal of the season:

  1. Saint-Maximin’s FA Cup winner at Oxford
  2. Jetro Willems’ thunderbolt at Anfield
  3. Matty Longstaff’s debut goal vs Man Utd

Matty’s goal was magical and Willems’ strike an absolute stunner to give us a shock leat at Liverpool, but ASM’s corker in the cup had everything. An individual bit of brilliance that came just when we needed it in a cup tie that was threatening to get away from us. The scenes that followed in the away end were pretty special too!

Best team performances of the season:

  1. Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle
  2. Newcastle 2-2 Man City
  3. West Ham 2-3 / West Brom 2-3 / Bournemouth 1-4

My winner may surprise a few, but I thought we were outstanding in every area of the pitch that day, executing Bruce’s clear game plan to perfection.

The 2-2 draw against Man City was another superb display, while 3-2 wins at West Ham and West Brom (FA Cup) along with our recent 4-1 victory at Bournemouth were the only three occasions we’ve played with swagger and genuinely outplayed the opposition (the scoreline flatters the hosts massively in both!).

Worst team performances of the season:

  1. Norwich 3-1 Newcastle
  2. Leicester 5-0 Newcastle
  3. Newcastle 0-0 Oxford

Our first away game of the season against newly promoted Norwich was a low point. We got absolutely battered without putting up a fight, looking all at sea defensively, anonymous in midfield and like a team of strangers in attack, with Almiron and Joelinton worryingly isolated.

The collapse at Leicester was worrying, as was the recent surrender at Man City, while the 0-0 draw at home to Oxford was tough to watch considering the level of opposition and occasion.

Signing of the season:

  1. Allan Saint-Maximin
  2. Jetro Willems
  3. ???

ASM is a clear winner here, with his £16m arrival from Nice proving to be one of the signings of the summer across all Premier League clubs.

A big shoutout must also go to Jetro Willems, who had been impressive at both ends of the pitch before injury cut his loan deal short, scoring some stunning goals and defending better than most expected too.

Worst signing of the season:

  1. Joelinton
  2. Krafth
  3. Bentaleb

At £40m, Joelinton’s return of 3 goals and 4 assists in all competitions hasn’t been nearly enough, while Krafth has proved to be a bizarre signing given he’s spent most of the season being our third choice option in a area where we lack real quality in the first place.

Bentaleb would also make the ‘top three’, having shown next to nothing since arriving – despite many having high hopes for the former Spurs talent.

I can’t say Danny Rose has impressed me either, looking unfit at times and a shadow of the player who was starring for Spurs not so long ago, but at least he’s done a job since Willems’ injury.

Feel free to give us your answers to all the above in the comments section below!

  1. No problems for me Olly.

    Sessegnon for LWB
    Barrios for midfield
and a seriously good striker. Eduoard still my favourite.

  4. I was thinking back to last season and I did have 1 good memory. The Bournemouth game. There were some great goals in that game.

Best NUFC game for goals. 5-0 against Man U. Remember that Kimtoon Ginola’s 1st and the icing on the cake of THAT chip?

Best game I ever saw was WC Germany-France in 1982. I was working in a Youth Hostel in Munich and watched on a giant screen getting sloshed with 1 mark beers and smoking about 2 packs of tabs.

  5. Ice – is love to see him get another term. Not because I think he’s a great president but just to see the look on the liberals faces… ?

But I’m sorry to say Joe Biden is atrocious. The US really is in a bad place. If the best they can come up with out of 300m people is Trump and Biden what a horror!

    lol i agree your a hard man 😆 😆

  7. Not really about liberal or conservative Stewie. Trump has some outrageous views and you would not want him as your neighbour let alone president. He is racist, a bigot, misogynist, a liar and a crook.

I was one of a very few over here who even gave him a chance last time but that was mainly because there are more guns than people in this country so you know there must be a fair few idiots who would vote.

I dont think Donald is stupid but he is sort of insane in the same way that most dictators are – Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin, Mussoilini. I would put him in that category.

      (Quote)

  8. The only reason I think the US will NOT elect Trump is they have now seen how bad he is. Before, they could only guess. Now they have seen his true colours up close and personal. And that colour is Orange and on the news every day with his pyscho-phants and cronies. He is the worst president in US history. #WorstCrisisManagerEver.

The man is crazy. He makes stuff up and 40% of the country believe him.

Biden looks like a corpse from Law and Order and I am not even sure he will last a full term. Get used to Kamala Harris Stewie 🙂

  9. Icedog: I watched the whole speech Trump made in Tulsa and he has gotten even worse. It was 2 hours of insane rants. I only watched it to make sure that I was not the one going crazy and it was the American electorate and his supporters that were.

I will be shocked if Trump is re-elected but he is a crook so he might have Vlad fix it for him. I dont even know why he wants the job in the first place. It would be my idea of the worst job in the world with people watching you 24 hours a day. It is not like in Kennedy’s day when he could sneak out and have his leg over Marilyn Monroe.

      (Quote)

  10. I know I rant, but mine actually make sense. I knew Rooney was done at 26 (great player before that though), I knew Ugly John Carver was useless and I know Bruce will get us relegates – without a miracle that would involve Dwight staying fit for the season and Sean and Florian regaining form.

I was right about Wilshere as well. All the press and pundits s@cked his d!ck. but it was obvious he was done.

Fatty: please dont sign Jesse Lingard (JLingz) that would send me into meltdown.

  12. Olly, mate: Shearer was pretty fast before his injures. But I agree he didnt have great pace at NUFC. That is probably what made him even better, that he was able to adjust his game. Whenever the players name the all time PL greats it is always Shearer and Henry.

I agree, even though they are pretty **** on everything else they say.

She is thinking of working for her fella now, he has a little company that supplies to the tv and film industry, he’s actually a locations manager so quite varied interesting work. Broadchurch, Liar and Peaky blinders just a few locations he sourced for.

  18. I see Masters has replied to Chi. Says he offered arbitration to make a decision on who would ultimately be controlling the club and PIF refused. Why? In my opinion the PL wanted KSA to be controlling so that would give them the right to reject it.

  19. Thanks for posting that Richard Masters letter Olly. It is total PR b@llocks. Before he got his cushy job as the the PL supremo he was PR director and it shows. It is all obfuscation and make believe.

I could go through the whole thing and explain how it is rubbish point by point but the bit about other PL clubs having no influence on the process says it all. He doesnt say that they didnt TRY to influence the process. The whole letter is a PR stunt. Tony Blair (Blare) would be proud.

Stu, mate. Did you read it? A bunch of non answers and deflections. Steven Taylor would be proud of the number of deflections Masters made!

This is what I expected though.

      (Quote)

  21. Now I am mad. That statement by Masters is just so Blair-esque in its bollickery. He has no shame. He is a puppet of the London and NW clubs.

The Saudis probably shouldnt own NUFC but neither should Mansour own MCFC or Abramovich Chelsea. It is all so contradictory and hypocritical and then this guy Masters comes out with this PR guff and expects us to swallow it? !

      (Quote)

  22. The good thing is that Masters has said something now so we can parse his nonsensical PR doublespeak. It really is Orwellian 1984 in its non-answer answers. Doublespeak in the purest form! I hope the MPs and supporter groups are smart enough to see it for what it is.

      (Quote)

  23. Isnt the Owners and Directors test supposed to be an arbitration process? Ask questions of the interested parties and then come to a decision based upon facts and rules? Why would you need a 2nd arbiter unless you are incompetent or need an excuse to justify a decision you had already arrived at at the behest of Liverpool and Spurs?

      (Quote)

  24. Wasnt the Owners and Directors test formerly called the “crooks, spivs and shyster test”? They let Abramovich own a club though, and Shiniwatra own Man City. Ex-Blackpool owner Owen Oyston was jailed for the rape of a 16 year old girl. He was sent to prison for it.

Just saying there seem to be different rules for NUFC.

      (Quote)

  25. PIF has invested in many high profile companies so what’s the problem and why should the consortium go to arbitration? As Eric says Master’s letter is a load of bollocks.

      (Quote)

  26. Bizarre that the PL wanted to go to arbitration but to arbitrate what? They hadn’t made a decision ffs!

      (Quote)

  27. Also I’m sorry to continue to go on about it but this Covid is a complete debacle now. Quarantined all over the place. We can’t continue to live like this – it’s a joke. Spain are having 3,000 new cases every day – but so what? Hospital admissions aren’t rising and deaths certainly aren’t.

How have we gone from “protect the NHS and save lives” to try and stop anybody getting Covid? That’s impossible.

      (Quote)

  28. I just heard that the “independent” arbiter board that Masters was brining in was Richard Keys, Niall Quinn and Miguel Delaney. If they couldnt commit to a unanimous decision then Danny Mills would toss a coin to decide it.

      (Quote)

  29. If two parties go to arbitration they have to accept the arbitrators decision and cannot then go to court over it. No wonder the PL wanted to go to arbitration .

  31. Parliament is on holiday until Sept 1. New season starts Sept 12. This is not getting resolved either way for months and I doubt Masters will say another word unless he is brought up before MPs.

We better get a couple of signings done ASAP and they will probably be frees.

I am still keeping my fingers crossed that Ashley is aware enough of our likely relegation to release funds for a striker.

      (Quote)

  32. Eric, Jabba won’t be spending anything, it’ll be frees and unknowns and fingers crossed again.
Not sure I’ve the stomach for another season of stress and awful football tbh. Without fans at games it’s not the same and no amount of piped in crowd noise will make it any easier to enjoy.

      (Quote)

  33. The more people try to clear up what is/was going on with the takeover/fakeover the more confusing it gets. Steve Wraith did like a 2 hour youtube show last night and I am still no further forward. It got repetitive so I could only get through like an hour and a quarter. But that’s the thing now, it has got to the point where you dont know who or what to believe. Even respected journalists change their tune and probably the most consistently correct source for NUFC news, NUFC.com, even said it was a done deal at one point.

I am sort of confused. Did Liverpool and Spurs say anything and if they didnt why have they been named and if it is a lie then why havent the people pushing the lie been called out on it?

Many other conspiracies and just PR doublespeak from Masters. I am not sure if I can take this any more.

      (Quote)

  34. What it comes down to is this, why if the O & D test started in April did it take until june for the PL to inquire who would be the named owner for investigating ? You would think that was the first question.
Furthermore, how do the PL have the right to say who should be the named owner, in this case MBS. is it not down to the buyers who’s name is down as owner, in this case PIF .
It’s the public investment fund that would own us not MBS, he is just a figure head .

      (Quote)

  35. We will be relegated next season. I can’t believe we will be as lucky again and with £30m to spend we have zero chance of signing the goals we need.

  37. Stuart: do we even have 30 million? I know I am repeating myself but Charnley has said in the past that when they give a budget that includes the wages of the players we sign over the length of the contract. And who gave this 30-35 million figure anyway? It just seems to be pulled out of someones ****. I cant remember Bruce, Ashley or Charnley giving that figure.

I might have missed it and would be very appreciative of a link showing where this figure originated. Seriously, I am not taking the micky. I would like to know who said it was 35 million because I cant remember seeing an official mention anywhere.

      (Quote)

  38. Does the Owners and Directors Test ban a state from owning a club?

Do Richard Masters and the PL hold themselves to higher moral standards (ground) than the British Govt, The Queen, the other 19 members of the G20?

Does MBS have the time to worry about day to day running of NUFC when there is an oil price crisis and global pandemic? Our proposed new Chairman would be the Director of the Punblic investment fund. I think he will be quite busy as well and will appoint a DoF and a Manager. The PL are not asking about that because they dont ask any of the other clubs about that. Do you think he would be fired for goings on at NUFC or for under par returns at the rest of the fund which would be more than 99.9% of the assets? I already know the answer. NUFC is a public relations exercise by the Saudis and would not cause the hiring or firing of our new chairman.

They are totally OK with allowing Saudi state sponsorship of Manchester United Via Saudi Telecom but use some excuse to delay and delay the NUFC decision because it would be Saudi State sponsorship. Last I looked Mohammad bin Salman was de facto leader and has final say on all state business. That includes Saudi Telecom a state run entity that Sponsors Man U. The PL cannot have it both ways but they seem to be arguing that they can!!!!!

He’s a good addition to the squad imo – a 7/10 most games he plays. He’s not a game changer or gonna win you matches necassary – but him and Hayden would be a excellent partnership and would allow the more creative players to focus on offence.

You need players like Hendricks and at 28, with the experience he has, I think it’s a very good signing.

  53. Has anybody watched this Hendrick guy. I have to admit I hardly ever watch Burnley or the Replublic if Ireland. From what I am reading he is a decent enough player who puts in a shift. This is what I see on Blogs and comments in The Chronicle where so many fans say that is all they want from NUFC players. Total b@llocks. They want a better class of player which is why we were all so excited about a takeover. We have been deeding off scraps, yes, even with Rafa’s teams that were hard to watch at times.

The fans continually use this trope about the hard working player being enough but all Keiran Clark or Mike Williamson had to do was put one foot wrong and the fans were on their backs.

Sure it is great to have skill and endeavor but the fans are lying when they say endeavor is enough. We want the players that can get us out of seats and plodders’ mistakes arev not tolerated for long. May as well watch a pub team if that is what we are satisfied with,

      (Quote)

  54. Are fans really going to be happy with Steve Bruce’s list of English players? No, it doesn’t matter how much they get stuck in. They will say we are settling for another relegation fight and have no ambition. Then out of the other side of their mouth they will repeat the “all we ask is a players that plays for the badge”. It is such a cliche but some convince themselves they believe it. Go to any match and listen to the groans when Mike Willamson gave the ball away, or even Ayoze Perez who does have a bit of skill.

Kim – it’s ridiculous, and just another kick in the teeth for a generation of kids who also now face a major recession – so good luck getting a job. I’m obviously not blaming the recession on the government coz I actually think the furlough system has been one of the few things they got right.

But if you were predicted an A* and got an A – you can take that. But if you’re predicted an A* and get a B or C – that needs looking into.

I do feel for these kids who have been studying hard for exams, then get told you can’t do them – then to be let down like this. It seemed such a simple process as well – bizarre how they have got it so wrong in some cases.

  58. Eric Sykes:

Eric – he’s a solid player mate. You’re right, he’s not going to get you jumping out your seat, but when was the last time Hayden got you jumping out your seat?.
I don’t expect he will singlehandedly win us games, but what players like him and Hayden give you is a solid base to allow the game winners to focus on doing just that.
I’m not excited by the Hendrick signing, but I think it’s a good one for what he can bring the team.

I don’t think Bruce has an all British list either. I think a couple of players he wants are British and the lazy journalists have came up with that narrative.

  59. I don’t buy these Smalling links either. We are well equipped with CBs as it stands anyway – but why would we shell out the fee Man Utd would expect, let alone the wages Smalling would expect. Load of sh!te imo.
