A year ago, it would’ve been fair to say Chancel Mbemba’s first season at Porto had been an absolute disaster.
He got injured in his first pre-season appearance and spent the majority of the 2018/19 season on the sidelines – whether he was fit or not.
The Congolese star was not only regularly left out of their matchday squads but told to train with their reserves.
Another year on and it would be an understatement to say he’s turned things around.
Not only did he force his way into the Porto side midway through the 2019/20 season and play a big role in guiding them to the Liga NOS title, he’s just won his second trophy in the space of a week with two goals and a man of the match display in the Taça de Portugal final:
He scored not once but TWICE to help Porto beat arch rivals Benfica on Saturday night, completing his incredible turnaround from zero to hero with the Portuguese giants.
The Chronicle have also reported that his stunning rise to form has caught the eye of several Premier League scouts, suggesting he’s now even being eyed up for a return to England.
It may be bittersweet, but it’s good to see the 25-year-old showing the world what he can do a few years on from his Newcastle United exit – not that he ever looked likely to score a brace of headers in black and white!
