£20m striker urged to join NUFC by Golden Boot winner after Sky Sports confirm our interest

Newcastle have received a surprise vote of confidence from Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips, who has urged Callum Wilson to join us instead of West Ham or Spurs this summer.

This comes after Sky Sports confirmed last week that we, alongside the London duo, were one of the clubs interested in the recently relegated Bournemouth striker valued at £20m.

Phillips was a goal machine for the Black Cats during his six year stint on Wearside and even scooped the European Golden Shoe while playing in a red-and-White shirt – making him the only Englishman to do so.

However, this has not stopped him from advising the Cherries star to sign at St James’ Park. Here’s what he told Football Insider, explaining why he believes Newcastle would be the best choice for the 28-year-old:

“If Harry Kane moved on, I would go to Tottenham but assuming Kane stays he will be the second striker

“I know what it is like to play football up in the North East, Sunderland fans will not thank me for this but I would go to Newcastle if I was Wilson.

“If he was to go to Newcastle or West Ham he is going to play because Haller and Joelinton have not exactly lit it up.

“Callum Wilson would have a fantastic chance of playing week in, week out and I would want that if I was moving.”

The point he makes about game time is valid, and one that Newcastle fans should be welcoming given there’ll be several clubs in the race to sign him following Bournemouth’s drop down into the second tier.

As an England international who’s proven himself at Premier League level he would walk into our side, and considering the lack of options we currently have up front, we would be fools to not snap him up for £20m.

The priority has to be a striker and Wilson’s goal record isn’t too shabby for a struggling Cherries side, netting around one in every three games over the course of his five year career on the South coast.

  1. We definitely don’t want another injury prone player at 20 mill or even 10 mill at West ham. And there is plenty out there better strikers than him cheaper and younger .
