According to reports in South America, Newcastle are in talks to sign Colombian international Wilmar Barrios.
This comes from Win Sports journalist Diego Rueda, who claims to be ‘certain’ both ourselves and AC Milan have held discussions with his current club Zenit St Petersburg over a potential move for the midfielder.
Rueda also claims that exit talks are ‘advancing’, but refuses to say which club are in pole position.
The former Boca Juniors star left swapped Argentina for Russia last year, joining Zenit for a fee of £13m in January 2019 after a potential move to Everton broke down.
Barrios is 26 and a tough tackling holding midfielder who has racked up 28 appearances for the Colombian national side.
It’s one to take with a pinch of salt for now, yet he may well fit our criteria given the signing of a dynamic defensive midfielder is believed to be high on the club’s agenda this summer.
