Mike Ashley issues new threat to Premier League if Saudi takeover can’t be revived – Report

According to The Telegraph, those close to the collapse takeover expect Mike Ashley to take legal action against the Premier League if a deal between himself and the Saudis is unable to be revived.

The piece states that those close to the drawn out process feel Premier League chiefs made the £300m deal ‘impossible’ to complete, with the Saudi PIF now looking for ‘written assurances’ from the league that a deal will go through if they are to return to the table for a second time.

Here’s a snippet from The Telegraph’s piece, which also reveals that Mike Ashley received assurances from the Premier League way back in April that there was “no red flags” to overcome:

“The Premier League is vulnerable to legal action from Mike Ashley for effectively derailing the Newcastle United takeover, intermediaries in the collapsed deal believe.”

“Those close to the process believe England’s top tier is in an “impossible position” as chief executive Richard Masters comes under sustained pressure to explain why the league’s directors and owners’ test hit a four-month impasse.”

“The league has consistently maintained privately that it took an “objective” approach to the proposed £300 million deal, but the Saudi sovereign investment fund behind the takeover is said to feel the delay was a thinly-veiled attempt to make the takeover impossible.”

“Ashley remains desperate to revive the deal, but PIF would now consider returning to talks only in the unlikely event that the league provides written assurances that it was finally ready to let the deal go through.”

“Those closest to the negotiations say the other option is for Ashley to pursue a potential damages claim against the league, given he is said to have received assurances from it in April that there were “no red flags” to the proposed takeover.”

This all backs up the Sky Sports story from Monday night, which stated the NUFC owner was now personally involved in the matter and trying desperately to resurrect a deal following ongoing dialogue with the buying side.

Of course, all of this just shows how hard it is to work out exactly what is going on, who’s talking to who, who remains committed and what could happen.

After being vocal in the run up the weekend and during it, PCP and The Ruebens seem to have quietened down a little. Perhaps they feel they have done their bit and ignited the flames. We have a petition that is heading towards 110,000 signatures and almost 50 MPs involved including the PM.

Yet The PL and He-Who-I-Refuse-To-Name continue their silence. Disgraceful, disgusting, disrespectful and downright rude have all been said. Let’s add embarrassing to that list. The pressure is immense but still we get nothing but the Sound of Silence.

Perhaps Ashley holds the key and one turn of the screw and a big push and the PL walls are opened and the Saudi’s can come marching through on their white chargers.

Let’s hope so!

  1. The premier League stinks and so does the so-called top six clubs they don’t want a top seven.!!!!

  2. Just think if we had done something wrong in the last few months, a fine and points deduction would be the penalty. Now because of their indecision, the EPL are making impossible for us to prepare for the new season e.g. how do you persuade players to join whichever end of the price spectrum you’re aiming at with no way of selling the club to them. Because of this, we’ll no doubt lose points we could have had. Therefore can we fine the EPL and make them give us those points because of the circumstances??? Every business needs planning time to do things. We still can’t do anything positive.

They’ve certainly made us the team everyone will want to play early on.

  3. Absolute disgrace and shameful discrimination shown by PL who should be sued for gross incompetence and arrogance in their complete mismanagement of the NUFC takeover situation. Off with their heads.

  4. For the silence to be this deafening it it tantermount to an admission of guilt and that the organisation ( PL) is as corrupt as we believe it to be.
I believe that once the cat came out of the bag there would be serious repercussions with the leagues sposonrs and various backers…hence the very loud silence from Masrers and Co.
Prove the Geordie public wrong Mr Masters…!
We know your sorry world of deception is crumbling around your ears, and the deception of those clubs that have aided your sordid efforts will surely come back to haunt both them and you.
We the north east public are accusing you of CORRUPTION.
Please take note ` Barclays Bank`…..! The name of your corporation is being so tarnished by your association with this CORRUPTION.
Should this tun into a legal quagmire as I believe it ultimately will, the damage will be insermountable , and the harm this action that is about to be inflicted upon the North East as a whole through the perceived massive ivnestment we are to ultimately miss out on is nothing short of a disgusting act of sreious crass mismanagement.
Carry on as you wish, but not to heed the warnings would be stupid and equally as crass.
    Sicerely yours.
