Watch Salomon Rondon drama save Rafa Benitez’s bacon against Obafemi Martins – Video

Just as our season was ending here in England, the new 2020/21 campaign was kicking off in China for ex-Mags Salomon Rondon and Rafa Benitez.

It’s been a brilliant start for the Venezuelan, who’s scored four goals in Dalian Yifang’s opening four games, however Rafa Benitez’s side are struggling – picking up just two points so far this season and sitting second bottom as a result.

On Monday, Rondon and Rafa came up against former NUFC striker Obafemi Martins during a trip to Shanghai Shenhua, and the former loanee scored two second half goals (including a 93rd minute equaliser) to save Benitez’s bacon and rescue a point in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Watch both goals here:

Interesting to see that Obafemi Martins is still playing 14 years on from his £10m move to Tyneside from Inter Milan!

As for Rondon, here’s another of his impressive strikes since the Chinese Super League got back underway, with this bullet header from last week being a carbon copy of the goal he scored against Bournemouth at St James’ Park:

So, Rondon’s started the season in emphatic fashion and Obafemi Martins is still playing at the age of 35, but can Rafa Benitez turn things around at Dalian Yifang after a tough first year in the job?

With them finishing 9th (out of 16 clubs) last season and starting this one with no wins in their opening four games, the pressure is on!
