Newcastle ‘closing in’ on mystery signing after positive transfer talks – Report

An intriguing new ‘exclusive’ has emerged from Football Insider today, with them reporting that we are on the verge of signing a new left-back.

Wayne Veysey’s piece gives away no names, but claims that a ‘Newcastle source’ has informed them that a deal is close to being completed for an unnamed left-back following a ‘breakthrough in discussions’ this week.

A pinch of salt is needed here, with Football Insider not known to be the most reliable of outlets, yet this is an area we desperately need to strengthen this summer – so let’s hope there’s some truth in this one.

The report states that the mystery player is being eyed up to ‘challenge for a first-team place next season’, although it seems highly unlikely that the man is question is Danny Rose.

The Spurs left-back recently stated that his top priority was to fight for his future at Tottenham this summer, not to mention the fact he was distinctly average during his half-season loan spell at St James’ Park.

So, who could it be?

A return for Jetro Willems is possible with him believed to be making excellent progress on his recovery from ACL surgery, while we’ve also been credited with an interest Sassuolo left-back Rogerio, Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam and Wigan’s Antonee Robinson in recent weeks – although the latter seemed set for Sheffield United just a few days ago.

It’s often the case that these signings out of the blue involve players we’ve never been linked to, so who knows! And who knows if this really is a breakthrough for Bruce or a load of twaddle from Football Insider’s ‘sources’.

Time will tell, but let’s hope this mystery left-back is a good one if this proves to be true!
