Let’s be honest, we’re never going to see a striker quite like Alan Shearer again at St James’ Park.
Several strikers will come and go, but Big Al’s ability to score any type of goal as an old fashioned number nine is a drying breed in todays game.
On the day of his 50th birthday, the club have shared a brilliant video dedicated to our ultimate all time great, looking back on his best bits in a black and white shirt.
Watch it below:
The celebration never changed, yet he was capable of scoring every type of goal you could imagine.
Whether it was a free-kick, penalty, scramble in the box, ball in behind or half chance with his back to goal, he’d always find a way of getting that ball into the back of the net.
He’d make a poor cross a good one with his sheer desire and will to get himself in the right place at the right time. It’s also worth noting he wasn’t huge at 6ft and didn’t possess great pace, yet his ability to dominate any centre-back in the air and break free of a defensive line was unrivalled.
That doesn’t even factor in his ability to bring others into play either, with his ability to hold the ball up and record of 64 assists showing he was more than just a goalscorer, too.
441 appearances. 260 goals. The highest goalscorer in Premier League history.
Happy Birthday, Alan Shearer!
