NUFC duo ‘struggling’ to be fit for start of the 2020/21 Premier League season – Report

Newcastle United defenders Jamal Lascelles and Fabian Schar are both ‘struggling’ in their race to be fit for the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

This is according to The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder, who reveals that both centre-backs are early doubts for our opening game of the new season on September 12th.

The defensive duo both went under the knife in mid-July, with Lascelles’ issue being ankle related and Schar suffering from a dislocated shoulder.

Bruce said in the last week of July that the Swiss star was likely to be out for ‘6-8 weeks’ following surgery – meaning he may not be back until we’re a few weeks into the new season – however it’s our skipper Jamaal Lascelles who’d be missed the most.

He may not be our best ball player or flashy on the eye, but we rarely look nearly as solid at the back when he’s missing.

As for Schar, he looked totally out of sorts post-lockdown and doesn’t appear to be in Bruce’s first-team plans when he has a fully fit squad to chose from – not that we’ll have much joy selling him if he’s stuck on the sidelines!

Let’s hope both can step up their recoveries soon, with the season just 4 weeks away.
