Journalist claims NUFC are now ‘favourites’ to sign England U-21 international on loan

According to TalkSPORT reporter Ian Abrahams, we are now the ‘favourites’ to land Chelsea talent Conor Gallagher on a season-long loan.

The England U-21 international was first reported to be a target of Steve Bruce’s earlier this month, with the Northern Echo claiming we were part of a long list of Premier League clubs competing for his loan signature.

A few weeks on, it’s Abrahams’ understanding that we are at the front of the queue for the 20-year-old talent who shone during Championship stints at Swansea and Charlton last season.

Gallagher bagged a combined 6 goals and 11 assists during those loan stints across 2019/20, with him playing alongside current Mag Freddie Woodman (who’s just re-signed for Swansea on loan) at the Liberty Stadium.

He’s always stood out when I’ve caught a glimpse of him last season, with his quick feet, quick thinking, tenacity and impressive engine standing him in good stead ahead of a potential step up to Premier League level.

His versatility is also useful. He’s naturally an attacking midfielder or ‘no.10’, but he appears to be capable of playing in a holding role or out wide, with his style of play reminding me a little of current Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley.

One to watch over the coming weeks and someone who could be a useful addition on loan – even if this sort of signing would NEED to be backed up with the arrival of a proven goalscorer.
