How the Saudi takeover got me through lockdown…but ultimately broke my heart

On the 14th April, the news broke on Sky Sports that there had been a £300 million pound bid accepted from the Saudi PIF, Reuben Brothers and Amanda Staveley to acquire Newcastle United.

For a brief moment, I left the dystopia we had all been living in for a little over a month. I was filled with genuine excitement for the first time in a while. The cans were in the fridge, local hero was blasting through the household. There was hope.

For thousands of fans, I imagine the reaction was much the same. At a time when the pandemic was at its worst, Newcastle fans had a momentary escape.

There was something to look forward to; hope and ambition for the future.

It was something to read, talk and think to think about away from the pandemic. When the world was filled with depressing stories and it seemed to be only getting worse, Newcastle fans had something to at the very least, distract them.

But that’s why the ultimate failure of the takeover, announced on the 30th July hurt so much.

In a flash, all the hope, excitement and ambition that had distracted us from the events of the last few months disappeared. We were left to deal with the pain that ensued.

Sadly, the takeover will only ever be a distraction. It seems as though it will never materialise and has resulted in a ‘what might have been?’ situation for the fans.

However, we have a lot to thank the Saudi PIF, the Reuben Brothers and Staveley for giving our city hope in such horrific circumstances, even though it ended up amounting to nothing.

We can only hope that they get their wish and are able to to transform this club the way they had planned in the near future.

  1. Is anybody surprised that our transfer budget is next to nothing? I have been saying for weeks that this 35 million figure was made up and that it was attributable to nobody. It was one of those things where if repeated often enough it gets to be believed. The Chronic and certain blogs and twitterati (Wraith, who I quite like) repeated this number so often that their readers just assumed it was fact. Donald Trump does this all the time and repeats lies so often that his supporters just parrot them as fact. It was a well known tactic of Josef Goebbels as well.

Have NUFC fans no memory of Ashley’s usual transfer dealings?

We are in a pandemic. We are losing all gate money as well as concessions, plus the PL clawed back some TV money this year (I saw the figure of 12 Mil for NUFC) and probably will for next year. At a minimum we will lose the per match TV fees because our games will not be considered premium because we are **** to watch. I think that is 1 mil per TV game.

This 35 mil was always fiction. I just hope that Fatty realises that he has to at least spend on a forward because otherwise we are going down and he will lose even more money that way. Not holding my breath though as he will probably gamble that we can make it up in January.

I will gladly eat crow if I am wrong because that would be best for the club.

  2. Agree Josh, it was a bit of light at the end of a very dark tunnel. If I’m honest i never really believed it would pass due to too many outside influences plus toon fans just aren’t that lucky.

  3. Eric, it’s gonna be freebies and loans i’d imagine. The rotund one gives even less of a **** now than he ever did.

  4. I also have to repeat that a few years ago Charnley went to great lengths in explaining that when a transfer budget was discussed that this included the fee, plus agent fees, plus player wages. The press always see a figure and say it is a “war chest” and quote it as if it will ALL be spent as transfer fees. Then the fans start looking around and speculating who we could get for the headline 35 million.

Look at Hendricks. He will probably get a 3 million signing on bonus and 3 mil a year for 4 years. That’s 15 million, so almost half of the total available, using Charnley’s accounting.

The thing I dont get about this accounting is that the wages are over time so they should not include them all in the current year. Plus, there will be outgoings so that should come off the budget. BUT this is NUFC and this is them putting up even more excuses. It really is BS but that is the way they try to shovel their shyte to us fans, many of whom believe it.

Until there is a story in The Mail who said that Agents are saying we are looking at loans and frees. Then reality sets in. I totally believe this and in fact The Mail are usually pretty accurate with NUFC stories.

Still, I am very disappointed that the press as a whole just pass on these figures and do not explain the game NUFC and Charnley are playing with the numbers.

I know mate. I think you were very sceptical about the “warchest”. You just have to hope that he sees we need a striker to protect his investment which would be cut in half, minimum, with relegation.

  6. Looks like Matty is about to sign. I said on the last thread that he would be mad to leave as he only has 3 players ahead of him – Shelvey, Hayden and Hendrick, and what other PL team would go into the season with only 3 experienced central MFs? So, a 20 year old and his brother will have the best chance of 1st team football at NUFC in my opinion.

It might be as likely as the English speaking world suddenly being able to see through the bullshit they are being fed by the oligarchs in power – yeah, I know, that’s not likely either – but without hope what do we have?

    Liverpool away
    Arsenal home
    Leicester away
    Man City home
    Shef utd home
    Fulham away

So 4 top sides and 2 likely big spenders.

Best hope we’re safe before that lot.
West ham have an easier last 6 as do Shef utd

Yeah, asked the wrong questions mate. I would of asked if he felt Gary Hoffman was compromised in his position being good friends with Keys and Bein /Qatar and his previous Barclays position who were bailed out by qatar in the banking crisis.

I would of asked about the piracy issue and what effect that had on the purchase
I would of asked about the letters bein sent to each PL club asking them to block the deal
I would of asked why they took so many weeks to ask who would actually own the club
i would of asked why a letter from the SAUDI court stating there would be no state interference into club matters was rejected. And if it was does that mean they are calling PIF/Saudi court liars

I can think of many more questions
The trust has basically asked the same questions as Masters answered in that letter they released last week !
What an utter waste of time and missed opportunity .

Probably more a valuation thing. US stock market (Dow) was down to 20k (from 27k) about 4 months ago and last week was around 28k. That’s a 40% increase for no real reason as the Corona virus over here has got worse than feared and profits will be down.

Will the market tank again? Who knows? But I am guessing the Saudis are locking in their gains seeing more risk than upside with the current economic crisis and especially since there seems to be a small but noticeable second wave in a lot of European countries.

And with oil prices down the PIF may actually need cash to prop up their own economy.

In their statement about NUFC the PIF said it was not economical to buy NUFC now. You didnt have to read too much between the lines to see that they thought the price was now too high and that they had been given an out when the exclusivity agreement ended. There is no way they will be back in for NUFC at 300 mil so we best forget about a takeover.

In fact, you would have to be stupid to buy us at that price so forget about BN Group as well. However, judging by the way they dress and their photoshopping you cannot rule out that they ARE that stupid.

Of course, the Saudis could play the long game and wait until we are relegated and pick us up for less than 150 million.

      (Quote)

  14. So let’s put this takeover **** to bed and see where we stand.

We should probably buy Willems as long as he is well on the way to recovery. Have until Oct 7th and we can keep our fingers crossed with Dummett until then.

We are probably done with the mid-field after Hendrick.

That leaves a striker. Who knows who that would be? I am 50/50 on whether we will buy or loan. We really dont have the money but does Ashley have a choice?

Then we will get a couple of loans. Probably a Chelsea youngster and someone form Europe that we havent tracked.

      (Quote)

  15. With that done, depending on the striker situation I think our squad is 14-19th. There are just so many bad squads out there that you cannot say we are the worst, but we are among the worst.

I reckon our 1st team is OK against the bottom 12 but in for a hiding against the top 4 and will likely pick up very few points against the top 8. Is that stating the obvious 🙂

So, what of the team against West Ham and do we have a chance? I would say yes. Here is a 4-3-3.

    Dubravka

    Manquillo Lascelles Fernadez Dummett

    Hayden Shelvey Hendricks

    St Max Gayle Almiron

  16. One last thing on the takeover. I have been watching Wraith and pals on Youtube and although it enjoyable you have to say they have been wrong on everything. They are even holding out hope that it is still alive this year. The Saudis have pretty much told them it is not but they keep on with their wishful thinking.

They all seem like nice guys and have contacts at NUFC. But their contacts have let them down. Especially the Geordie Dentist who I think was all in for the BZG takeover as well based on what his contacts told him.

Wraith has also repeated the 35 million transfer budget figure although with a tiny bit of skepticism. I dont think anybody should ever say that number without also saying it is probably 95% BS.

Time to let it go lads and concentrate on slagging off Joelinton. Supermac on tonight so that will be another 10 minutes of slagging off Big Joe. I feel sorry for the lad but it is entertaining at times because Mal just goes off on him.

      (Quote)

  17. FINALLY….

Just listened to Wraith’s latest and John Gibson was questioning the supposed budget. He said look to Ashley’s past and look to what is happening in the world. This was obvious 3 weeks ago and nobody said it (I did) and parroted the 35 million transfer kitty line. They never tell you before the fact until news comes out like the Mail saying we are targeting frees and loans. If they cant see what is as plain as the nose on Phil Thomson’s face, then what use are they?

Supermac is also saying that the Saudis have walked. That was obvious from their statement. I had held out a little bit of hope but mentioned on here a few times that they were walking because their valuation had changed and not just because of PL roadblocks – because they fckn explicitly said so. There were so many people who desperately wanted this to go through that they ignored the facts.

That doesnt mean that I was against petitions or getting clarity from the PL. There was definitely one rule for the top 6 and another for NUFC – some duplicity and hypocrisy made transparent by Man U’s deal with Govt owned Saudi Telecom.

The good news is that NUST rolling over and letting the PL tickle their tummy might mean that this will now end. That we will realise there is absolutely no chance of a takeover this year.

And if this Chopra deal goes through I will bare my **** in Fenwick’s window. Hang on, I think I would have to quarantine for 14 days coming from the US and I think Fenwicks is closed anyway 🙂

      (Quote)

  18. Screw it. I will finish my rant.

I dont think there was false hope among the NUFC fans that this time it would be different. The main thing was that Ashley had accepted the offer this time and that the PL had approved Oligarchs and Sovereign Wealth Funds in the past. Logic said, how could they then possibly block our deal? And still it dragged on. For 17 weeks. But the Govt were staying out of it and had even relaxed their own dealings with the Saudis.

Man U were dealing with the Saudi Govt in a massive Saudi Telecom sponsor deal and the only real objection was on human rights but the Govt themselves had just ignored that.

Piracy? Surely the PL would not block the bid based on that if they wanted the Saudis to be in on the next PL TV rights in 2022. Probably splitting off SA into a separate entity to the rest of the N African Block.

All logic pointed to them passing this deal and yet they delayed until the Saudis decided it wasnt worth the money, effort and bad publicity.

I still think the PL explanation is convoluted and hypocritical and that their written and verbal explanations are total non-answers and doublespeak.

Honestly, nowt surprises me anymore, and who knows how much influence the Russians have over the USA and the UK.
I certainly think they have bots on social media, they are very easy to spot as they all phrase stuff in a certain way and there is no emotion in their tweets that you’d expect to see from regular folk and also never a spelling error either.

Putin and Trump are dangerous people imo. Part of me thinks Boris is compromised in some way but we’ll never really know as this stuff gets well hidden by the establishment and agenda driven media. Where there is big money and power there is inevitably corruption, just look at the PL 😉

I think Ashley is overpricing us by about 100 million pounds but I think there is a chance we will stay in the PL despite him and Bruce. Why??? We actually have 6 or 7 players who are better than the best 6 or 7 at Palace, Fulham, Burnley, West Brom.

    These would be:

    Dubravka
    Lascelles
    Dummett
    Shelvey
    Hayden
    St Max
    Almiron

Possibly even a fit Lejuene, confident Longstaffs and uninjured Gayle.

The teams I named have really **** squads so I am not desperate yet.

Like a Joe Hart head and shoulders commercial except I doubt they would have him now with his thinning hair.

Anyway, I digress. I just feel I write things on here and then maybe contradict myself. But then I think that is my lot in life for being born in Newcastle. I think it is NUFC that make me hi-lo about them because that is not my usual nature. I am usually cynical all of the time 🙂

      (Quote)

  32. I have to get this off my chest. I have a major pet peeve and it is Grealish and Man City. They have so much talent – and still they cheat! Grealish runs into opponents’ legs 8 times out of 10 to get a foul on the edge of the box and Pep has City players foul anybody that is making a fast break.

It infuriates me because they dont need to cheat. Grealish could be a great player if he used his talent correctly.

      (Quote)

  33. Eric – I think Manquillo & Fernandez are decent players too – and Clark can be useful too.

The obvious issue is goals. If Gayle is fit I think could be useful – but if he hits 10 goals then he’s had a good season based off his previous form. That won’t be enough, and can we count on ASM, Almiron, Joelinton and Carroll to get the extra goals – we can’t even count on Carroll being fit 3 games running!!.

We desperately need another forward who would be capable of getting 10-12 goals. We need another LB because Dummett has suffered with injuries.

Finally for balance of the team I’d want a natural right sided forward.
ASM, Almiron and Joelinton are all left of centre forwards – behind them Atsu and Murphy are left sided players and even Ritchie is naturally left footed.

I think Yedlin could be switched to a right winger. He’s always been better going forward than defending – but I’d want a more established forward for the starting 11 ideally.

      (Quote)

  34. I think there’s every chance we can sell Murphy – he had a good enough loan spell for some Championship clubs to come in for him.

My concern is how do we shift the likes of Muto, Atsu and Saivet – how much would we get for them even if we could sell them?!. I don’t see us selling them, and I don’t see them going out on loan either – do we bother giving them a squad number? – I know it’s a no for Saivet.

I bet that’s about £50-60k a week wages as well.

      (Quote)

  35. My god I may have hugely under estimated those wages!!.

From what I can find, Muto is on £55k pw, Saivet on £35k pw and Atsu on £30k pw, Murphy is on £25k pw and Lazaar on £15k pw – there is 5 players, and £160k pw I just don’t see us being able to shift.

Mind you, Joelinton is getting £80k pw as well like ??‍♂️

Georgio – yeah I like him & he’s a good young player – but he’s been a bit goonered I think. A bit of a ‘can cover a few different positions, but mastered none’ type player.
They’ve had him at RB, MF and I’m sure he was LB at the end of the season there.

The obvious one for me with our budget is Ryan Fraser. I know he didn’t do much last season – but who at Bmth did?!. He was pushed out coz Howe loanee Harry Wilson. But Fraser has pace and aggression and would be great with ASM and Gayle on a counter attack I reckon.

      (Quote)

  38. Georgio – I would like us to go and get Ollie Watkins and Rico Henry from Brentford mate.
Both very good young players and I’ve watched Brentford a few times, Watkins could handle the PL and is also full of pace – I could see him linking up with ASM.

Brentford have been linked with an interest in Murphy – so a cash plus player deal could be done maybe.

Brentford have just built a new stadium and I think they were hoping for that promotion money – without it they may need to sell a player or 2 to balance the books.

The PL want arbitration and that always takes an age. Think about City and FFP or even Keegan’s case against Ashley. They took months to get resolved. I just dont see how we can have much movement before it is too late for the consortium to make any changes to NUFC.

Then it is all going to depend on how we start to see if there is continuing interest. If we have a good start, they could be laying the groundwork for January. A bad start, and they will either walk away or think about a much lower offer/wait for relegation.

I was done with all of this speculation and now the whole can of worms is being kept open.

It was Pardew mate. He played him as a hold up/lay off type forward, but that was clearly not his strengths. Get the ball out wide and cross it in and he can score goals – as he did against Man Utd & Inter tonight.
He scored loads in Holland before coming to us, but they played that way too – wide and cross it for him to attack.

  45. With Matty and I am sure Hendrick signed it is all about a striker now. That will make or break our season (he said, stating the obvious).

We need a left back but that wont change much and we can find one on loan to compete with Dummy.

It is all about goals and if Ashley cannot see that then we are farked. And so is he!!!! because it will wipe 150 mil off his investment if we are relegated.

It would be nice to dream about getting another centre mid and a number 10 but that is not where we are at. We are shopping in the second hand store and poundland but we need to make one purchase that is on a different level – if they will even come.

He defends the NUST saying they did a great job promoting the petition. I think he is right. But then he goes on to say that you cannot criticise them for asking the same questions of Richard Masters that he had already been addressed in his written non-answer answers. Of course you can criticise them. They were given a forum as a fan group that comes along once every few years and they totally abdicated their responsibilities as our representatives at a crucial time for NUFC.

To say “what are you doing” to his fellow NUFC fans totally misses the point. They, NUST, had a forum to ask the elite PL top brass to explain themselves and simply gave them a pass…

Please Sir, Mr Masters can you repeat in person exactly the same non-answers you and your lawyers wrote last week? Thanks, and I will roll over and let you tickle my tummy now. Sincerely, NUST.

  49. Agree Eric, it was a big missed opportunity . Why settle for repeat answers to same question from just a week before? madness. There were so many other ones to ask or even to get him to elaborate on his previous ones where they weren’t satisfactory .
They did do well on the petition but fell at the final hurdle, close but no cigar.

I actually hope it’s the last we hear of Amanda and pcp now, she’s tried twice and failed and clearly she’s not gonna get us
She and the Ruebens were obviously wrong footed by PIF when they withdrew but they clearly
don’t want to own more than 10% each and i can’t imagine there is anyone else wanting to take up the 80% so she needs to put it to bed once and for all now with a statement saying it’s over.
There are still too many fans living in false hope .

RG Toon, gonna take a while to get used to the new name, too used to Dubai. How’s the new house and any luck on the job front ?

  50. Now I have decided that the Geordie Dentist is The Wizard of Oz. He is fake. Make believe. The curtain has been pulled back and he knows nothing. Everything he has ever said has been his misbelief in some fools he met behind the curtain and he has passed this on to NUFC fans. Fool, nothing he has EVER said has been fact. EVERYTHING has been his own gullible view of the world.

Hastie: Aye, I love them NUST people. How about you?

  54. What’s the craic with Matty only signing a 2 year deal???.

I think that’s a mistake – in fact, I wouldn’t have offered it. A four year deal at the very least – even if that came with a release fee.

It’s a deal that seems all on his terms and stinks of desperation by NUFC.

It should have been a 4-5 year deal or walk for me ??‍♂️

  55. Yeah I know I went on a rant about the self-called, self-styled Three Amigos but they are acting like there is a chance that the PIF deal will be resurrected. There is a less than 1% chance and you pushing this agenda to save face because all of you said you were In The Know is a bit farcical now like.

Chopra goes on Wraith’s show and he will not have a word said against him. He should say Chopra and his 80’s boy-indie band cohorts are full of shyte. Why does anybody give Chopra the time of day?

If that’s true, then i truly give up Ice. That is just asking for trouble, nowt against Gayle but he will not stay fit and neither will Andy and Joe cannot score, oh boy we are screwed.

  59. I see Bruce is spouting the same nonsense. He will only bring a striker in who’s better than what we have. Why would he even say that? Who isn’t better than a striker who scored about 3 goals all season? It’s a joke.

I can’t see us staying up To be honest as I don’t see a good transfer window.
