Newcastle have completed the signing of 18-year old midfielder Niall Brookwell from Liverpool.
The promising youngster will join our academy and link up with the rest of Chris Hogg’s U23 squad immediately, with the club’s statement claiming we beat a host of Premier League and EFL clubs to his signature.
Brookwell had been a part of Liverpool’s youth setup since he was nine years old and earned his U18 debut under the stewardship of Reds legend and former Academy coach Steven Gerrard.
Originally from Wigan, the 6ft 1′ talent plays predominantly in central midfield but is also comfortable playing as a central defender.
Here’s what U23 boss Chris Hogg told NUFC.co.uk following his arrival:
“He’s got good pedigree, having come through the Liverpool Academy – he’s worked with a lot of good people there and has some good habits and a real good work ethic.
“I’d watched a lot of his clips before we signed him, and having seen him in the flesh in training he seems to be a good character, a good personality to have in the building, and somebody who we’re hoping we can add a few more layers to, in terms of his football and personally, where he can be a success at the football club.”
What makes his signing a little bit sweeter is that the Sunderland Echo reported back in July that we pipped our local rivals to his signature – a good start for the young man!
One to watch over the coming season as he looks to make the step up from U23 football to senior level.
Welcome to Tyneside, Liam!
