Sky Sports confirm Premier League duo almost signed Matty Longstaff before late U-turn

Sky Sports have confirmed that current ‘free agent’ Matty Longstaff is set to re-sign for Newcastle United after Steve Bruce convinced him to sign a long-term contract at the club.

This comes from Keith Downie and follows on from Martin Hardy’s big ‘exclusive’ late last night, with Sky Sports’ North-East correspondent also revealing that Brighton, Leeds and Udinese all made moves to sign him before his U-turn on Tyneside.

Here’s what Downie’s had to say, revealing how talks with Bruce played a key role in convincing the 20-year-old talent:

Steve Bruce has convinced Matty Longstaff to stay at Newcastle United.

“The midfielder is set to sign a long-term contract to stay at his boyhood club.

“Udinese, Leeds & Brighton all attempted to take him on a free transfer but the 20-year-old will stay at SJP.”

Finally some good news at the end of a drawn out saga!

Not only would’ve it been frustrating to see one of our brightest Academy products leave, it would’ve been a real kick in the teeth to see him developing elsewhere in the Premier League with one of Leeds or Brighton.

Good to see common sense has prevailed in the end – even if it’s take well over half of 2020 to sort out.

Welcome back, Matty!
