Steve Bruce has revealed his delight at completing the signing of Jeff Hendrick on a free – admitting he’s been a big admirer of the Irishman for some time.
The Republic of Ireland international arrives on a free transfer after rejecting a new deal at Burnley earlier this summer and has signed a four-year deal at St James’ Park.
Here’s what Bruce told NUFC.co.uk, explaining why his experience, versatility and great professionalism will make him a “big asset” to his squad – both on and off the pitch:
“Jeff is someone I’ve admired for a long time.
“I watched him when he was at Derby, then he went to Burnley for a lot of money and couldn’t afford him, so I missed out then!
“He’s an experienced international football who can play all across the midfield so we welcome him aboard.
“He’ll be a big asset to us, on and off the pitch.
“He’s a great pro, down to earth, and at the age of 28 it’s a wonderful time to get somebody.
“It is the peak of his career – he’s a really fit boy who has played 122 times in the Premier League for Burnley over the last four years, and I’m sure he’ll be a great addition to the squad.”
Based on Bruce’s comments, it seems he tried to sign the 28-year-old during his time at Hull, before he completed a £10m move from Derby to Burnley in 2016.
It’s not the flash signing or proven goalscorer fans are crying out for, however Hendrick will offer a few key traits to this squad – hard work, versatility and Premier League experience.
A more reliable upgrade on Bentaleb who will give us another useful option in midfield.
