NUFC release the interesting XI set to start today’s 2pm friendly vs Crewe Alexandra

Newcastle United have announced the side Steve Bruce has selected to start our first pre-season friendly of the summer against League One side Crewe Alexandra today.

The game kicks off at 2pm and will be played at the Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate campus we’ve been training at over the past week.

Here’s the starting XI (although keep in mind Steve Bruce is expected to make 11 changes at half-time):

(4-2-3-1): Gillespie – Krafth, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett – Hayden, Barlaser – Murphy, Almiron, Saint-Maximin – Carroll.

So, it’s a ‘debut’ for new boy Mark Gillespie, while Jacob Murphy and Dan Barlaser have both been given big chances to impress Bruce following impressive loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham respecitvely.

It’s also good to see Lascelles, Clark and Dummett back after recent injuries, while Almiron, Saint-Maximin and Carroll could prove to be a real handful for the League One side.

There’s no Jeff Hendrick, but that’s no surprise given he only linked up with his new teammates yesterday and hasn’t played since March.

Kick off is at 2pm and highlights are expected to be released on the club’s official Twitter page later this afternoon.
