With our need for a proven goalscorer more desperate than ever following an injury to Dwight Gayle, we asked Newcastle fans on social media to name a ‘realistic’ signing we could look at – keeping in mind our alleged budget of around £30-£35m.

A few commented with Shefki Kuqi on a pay as you play. A joke it may be, but we’re probably more likely to re-sign the 43-year-old Fin than some of the names on the list above!
The most popular mentions were the likes of Wilson, Edouard, Watkins, Batshuayi, King and Morelos, but all would demand a fee of at least £20m.
That’s what you pay for a decent striker, never mind a proven Premier League goalscorer, however questions remains as to whether Mike Ashley will have the appetite to spend ‘big’ – especially two forwards may be needed if Gayle’s injury is bad, along with a left-back and winger.
