Earlier this month, it was revealed that a sizeable sell-on clause was inserted into Ivan Toney’s contract when we sold him to Peterborough for just £650,000 back in 2018.
Daragh MacAnthony, Peterborough’s chairman, also confirmed that the clause was “very large”, meaning we’d be entitled to a hefty chunk of any future transfer fee the League One side would go on to receive for the talented 24-year-old.
Two years on and almost 60 goals later following two prolific seasons in the third tier, Toney looks set to seal a big move to Brentford, with Sky Sports confirming that their £10m bid has been accepted.
What percentage of that fee are we due you may wonder? Well, the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope revealed late last night that a 30% sell-on clause exists in his deal, meaning we’re set for a windfall of over £3m.
As Hope states, this £3m plus should go straight into Steve Bruce’s transfer budget – which needs all the help it can get after being ‘cut in half’ to around £30-£35m following COVID-19.
It’s not a huge amount, but in a world where you can always bank on us to penny pinch where possible, it may just help us match an asking price we were a few million short of our enable us to offer a top target the wages he’s demanding to make the move North.
Either way, it’s time we got moving in the market – especially when Bruce promised fans last Friday that we’d bring in another ‘2, 3 or 4’ BEFORE the season begins on September 12th.
