According to reports in Portugal, Newcastle United have tabled a bid in excess of £13m for Porto striker Moussa Marega.
This comes from A Bola, who report that the Portuguese giants are looking to get closer to £18m for the Mali international – who’s out of contract next summer – and that negotiations are continuing between the two clubs.
The 29-year-old powerhouse has bagged 60 goals and 30 assists over the past three seasons, including 6 goals and 5 assists in 15 Champions League appearances.
The Chronicle’s Mark Douglas has also commented on the link below:
A powerful striker with pace and an eye for goal fits the bill based on our system, but many have commented on the fact Marega is 29 – an age that stopped Mike Ashley signing Salomon Rondon last summer.
That said, Douglas believes he CAN see the club spending £13m on a player of Marega’s age based on the four-year-deal we’ve just handed to an ageing Jeff Hendrick:
His age will raise doubts about our willingness to match their alleged asking price, but the fact he’s out of contract in 2021 makes it seem like they’d buckle and eventually accept a cut-price fee – if this latest transfer rumour is true, that is!
One to watch (this isn’t the first time we’ve been strongly linked to him over the years) or one from the Portuguese press that’ll be played down within an hour?
We shall see, but it’s about time we did get moving in our bid to sign a new striker or two!
