Bruce hopes to sign Norwich star, top free agent & Callum Wilson after Holding arrives – Report

The Daily Mail have revealed THREE players Steve Bruce is hoping to sign if and when a loan deal for Arsenal’s Rob Holding goes through ‘next week’.

The report states that Norwich left-back Jamal Lewis is on our wanted list, along with former Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser – currently available on a free – and Cherries striker Callum Wilson.

The rumours for Fraser and Wilson aren’t exactly revelations, having both been linked on several occasions this summer, however it’s interesting to see Lewis linked – a player who could be a very useful addition in our bid to bring a much needed left-back to the club.

Here’s a snippet from the Daily Mail’s piece, which claims Holding should sign next week and suggests Fraser’s wage demands may be an issue:

“Newcastle United are close to finalising the loan signing of Rob Holding from Arsenal.

“Steve Bruce is eager to bolster his squad with homegrown signings but has a limited budget.

“Sportsmail revealed Newcastle’s move for the defender last week and the 24-year-old is expected to wrap up the signing after the weekend.

“He is also keen on Norwich City left-back Jamal Lewis, Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson and free agent Ryan Fraser but will struggle to meet the financial requirements.”

This is from Simon Jones, the man who first broke news of our interest in Rob Holding last Friday, so it’ll be interesting to see what comes of all of the above.

Lewis could be a shrewd signing, being someone Liverpool made a £11m bid for before signing Olympiacos’ left-back instead. The promising full back played 28 times last term and showed genuine attacking threat at times.

Fraser would be a top signing on a free, although astronomical wage demands and the distasteful nature of his Bournemouth exit makes me wonder if we’ll look elsewhere.

As for Wilson, his asking price is set at £30million if Lee Ryder is to be believed, meaning that would surely have to come down considerably if he’s to work within our alleged budget. of ‘£30-£35m’.

Perhaps this is why we’ve made an alleged ‘£13m bid’ for Porto’s Moussa Marega, with Wilson’s hefty price tag and reported wage demands of ‘over £75,000’ likely to be an issue if we also plan to sign two strikers, a winger on big wages and a £11m-rated left-back?

  1. Holding would mean either Schär or Lejuene or both being sold I think. Holding may be with an option to buy – or may be cover with Kelland Watt gets some experience on loan ready to step up next season.

Lewis would be a fantastic signing imo. The Norwich full backs were excellent last season and Lewis is an exciting young English player to bring in.

Fraser would be a good addition too I think. He played well at B’mth then Howe brought in Harry Wilson and dropped him, and that’s where the fall out came at Bmth. Good RW option imo.

A fit Callum Wilson would be an excellent addition – but there’s the problem with Wilson. We have Gayle out already, and Carroll is always a training session away from injury. So the last thing we need is a 3rd injury prone forward.
It might not work out that way – look at Ings to Saints. But it’s one hell of a risk imo.
