Interestingly, Bruce’s right-hand man also dropped a big hint on Jacob Murphy’s future, suggesting that he now looks set to stay at St James’ Park – NOT be loaned out or sold as has been reported – after ‘catching the manager’s eye’ so far in pre-season.
Speaking to NUFC TV, here’s what Agnew had to say about the winger after his goal against the Tykes:
“He has genuine pace.
“Confidence is the key word.
“He also added goals to his game in the Championship and finished with nine in a successful loan period.
“He’s certainly taken the manager’s eye in this short pre-season so we will keep on with Jacob to get on with his work.
“I’m sure he will be around this season.”
A host of Championship clubs have been linked and it was reported just a week or two ago that Bruce looked set to cash in if possible or loan him out, however that last line suggests we may have had a change of heart.
Then to Carroll, another player who’s caught the eye of the coaching team over pre-season with two starts and two top class finishes:
“For a striker to get two in two whether pre-season or in the season is all positive.
“We know big Andy he gets underestimated for his technical ability.
“When Jonjo cut it across for him he smashed it in the bottom corner, he is in a good place.
“He looks fit and lean and he will be pleased with the two goals.”
So, a positive start to pre-season for Murphy and Carroll, although this shouldn’t be a reason to call the duo two ‘new signings’ – something many Mags will be fearing as we struggle to sign quality attackers in the transfer market.
Let’s hope Carroll can stay fit, Murphy can keep impressing to keep those confidence levels high and a few quality signings can be made in forward areas over the next few weeks!
