Callum Wilson has revealed that Alan Shearer spoke to him just a few days ago about a move to Newcastle United – not that he seemed to need much convincing to sign over the dotted line at St James’ Park!
This isn’t the first time the pair have been in touch, with Wilson recently admitting that Big Al congratulated him on his England call-up back in November 2018 and asked him to make sure he didn’t score any goals against Newcastle for Bournemouth!
Since completing a £20m move to Tyneside today, Wilson has discussed the recent chat he had with the former Newcastle no.9 about life in the North-East and the club itself.
Here’s what he had to say to NUFC TV, along with his interview with Sky Sports’ Keith Downie on his chat with Big Al:
“It was really encouraging to hear it from such a legend.
“It was out of the blue, the text message as well, so I was quite surprised but it was so appreciated.
“We’ve kept in touch.
“Shearer messaged me when I got a call-up for England and we’ve also been in touch about me coming here.
“I asked a few questions about what it was like around the town and things like that and he did nothing but praise the football club and of the place.
“It was already in my mind that I was coming here but that made it concrete.”
“He’s represented this football club and if I can even do a quarter of what he’s done for the club and in the league then I’ll be alright!”
So, it looks like Shearer – a good friend of Steve Bruce’s – played a part in helping convince Wilson to sign, even if the striker admits his mind was already made up.
Interestingly, it seems like that was a chat between our greatest number 9 and our latest number 9, with The Athletic claiming Wilson will be handed the famous shirt from current Mag Joelinton.
Here’s the list of no.9’s he looks set to join:
- Jackie Milburn
- Len White
- Malcolm Macdonald
- Micky Quinn
- Andrew Cole
- Les Ferdinand
- Alan Shearer
- Obafemi Martins
- Andy Carroll
