Bruce handed chance to sign Chelsea talent after Crystal Palace opt for NUFC ‘target’ instead – Report

In the final few days of August, the Northern Echo reported that Steve Bruce had identified Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher as his ‘leading loan target’.

Then, just over a week ago, reports in the capital revealed that Crystal Palace had agreed a deal to bring the highly-rated England U-21 star to Selhurst Park – only for that deal to collapse today.

Why? Because the Daily Mail’s Adrian Kajumba reports that the Eagles have opted to sign Michy Batshuayi instead, making a deal for Gallagher impossible due to Premier League sides only being able to loan ONE player from a single club.

Alan Nixon actually reported yesterday that we were competing with Palace in a bid to sign Batshuayi, with Bruce eyeing another striker after Callum Wilson after Gayle’s long-term injury, however it seems the Belgian is set for another temporary spell under Roy Hodgson after extending his current deal at Chelsea.

That said, this has now opened the door for us to go back in for Conor Gallagher – if Bruce still wants him that is.

We may have just signed Ryan Fraser, but with us having two domestic loan slots still available and lacking depth in attacking areas should one of Almiron or Saint-Maximin get injured, a deal for Gallagher could be a very smart one.

He’ll have plenty suitors and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up at one of the newly promoted clubs instead, but it’s definitely one to watch!
