Player released by Newcastle could now join Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer – Report

Former Newcastle United stopper Rob Elliot is being linked with a potential move to Blackburn Rovers following NUFC’s decision to release his this summer.

This comes from the Lancashire Telegraph, who claim the Championship side are weighing up a move to sign the 34-year-old goalkeeper on a free agent.

Blackburn are our opponents in the second round of the Carabao Cup, with the club confirming today that the game will take place at St James’ Park on Tuesday 15th September at 7.30pm.

Should they offer him a deal, it would see also Elliot link up with former Mag Adam Armstrong – a player who’s just come off the back of his best season in senior football after bagging 17 goals and 7 assists in 2019/20.

A move to the Championship for first-team football could be an ideal one for Elliot, with him spending the past few years as our FOURTH choice goalkeeper behind Dubravka, Darlow and Woodman.

He won our player of the season award for 2015/16, but given his last start was in December 2017, his release was long overdue!

A great bloke by all accounts and a decent servant at St James’ Park prior to his recent decline. Let’s hope he finds a new club soon.
