Sky Sports have revealed in the last few moments who will wear the no.9 shirt for Newcastle United ahead of the 2020/21 season – and it’s a slight surprise!
Following Callum Wilson’s arrival on Monday, The Athletic reported that it was their understanding our new £20m man would be handed the famous shirt.
However, as Keith Downie reveals below, it will actually be Joelinton who keeps the number 9 jersey – suggesting a second show of faith in the striker by Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce and/or a steely determination from the Brazilian to prove his doubters wrong:
Wilson was widely expected to land it, however it’s now been confirmed that he’ll wear 13 ahead of the 2020/21 campaign – a number he always wore during his time at Bournemouth and one he takes from forgotten man Yoshinori Muto.
Interestingly, a Bournemouth fan has just told me that Wilson was offered the number 9 shirt at Bournemouth but always preferred 13 – not that I would’ve expected him to turn it down this time around if Joelinton was willing to surrender.
One thing this does is all but end rumours that Joelinton could seal a surprise (yet highly unlikely) move to Turkey this summer, with the Shields Gazette reporting earlier today that Fenerbahce were showing serious interest.
Happy with Bruce’s decision or would you have liked to see Wilson take the number 9?
