Sky Sports have poured cold water on claims this afternoon that we’ve made another bid for Lille star Boubakary Soumare.
It was reported by popular journalist Fabrizio Romano that we’d had a £32m bid rejected for the Frenchman by the Ligue 1 side, however Sky’s man in the North-East Keith Downie says it’s new to him.
As he reported back in January, he insists that a bid was made for the highly-rated 22-year-old earlier this year, with him turning down a move to Tyneside after our £35m bid was accepted.
But, he believes there’s been no second offer from us this summer, with him revealing in his latest transfer update on Twitter that we’re instead ‘only looking at the loan market’ after Mike Ashley sanctioned a trio of deals worth £35m earlier this week:
It’s worth noting that Downie’s latest transfer piece stated that Bruce was looking to sign a centre-back and striker, saying he would be ‘creative’ in the loan market now the bulk of his summer budget has been spent on Callum Wilson (£20m) and Jamal Lewis (£15m).
The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has also suggested talk of a second bid for Soumare is untrue, although does admit he’s a player the club still like:
In all honesty, it’s no surprise to hear that the Soumare link has been rubbished.
Yes Romano has 1.7million followers and has got a fair bit right in his transfer updates this summer, however we are not only well stocked in midfield, but seem so unlikely to splash another £30m plus after the bulk of our business was completed over the past few days.
