West Ham 0-2 Newcastle: New signings score in opening day win in over the Hammers

We ran out 2-0 winners against West Ham at the London Stadium tonight and look a completely different team to last season, playing on the front foot in a well deserved win over the Hammers.

Here’s my thoughts on a brilliant victory.

The starting line-up certainly divided opinion before the match, with Bruce leaving Almiron out and starting Andy Carroll in a 4-4-2. Jamal Lewis, Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick all made their debuts, with Karl Darlow starting in goal in Dubravka’s absence.

I’ll be totally honest, I wasn’t exactly bursting with confidence after seeing the starting line-up and formation, but we dominated the early exchanges and looked the better side.

Callum Wilson had three half chances – the best a curling effort from range that went just wide of the top corner. Fernandez had a header saved by Fabianksi and Shelvey struck the side netting with a thunderous effort.

Despite being off the pace, it was the home side who came closest to opening the scoring, with Angelo Ogbonna and Pablo Fornals both hitting the crossbar in the opening 45.

The match was certainly there for the taking and there was a real sense of optimism heading into the break – even if we were yet to break the deadlock.

Then, ten minutes into the second half, two of our new boys combined as Jeff Hendrick nodded a deflected cross into Callum Wilson – who then poked the ball past the keeper. A debut goal for our new talisman and we were deserving of the lead. He does love scoring against the Hammers, with him making it 8 goals in 9 games!

The rest of the second half mirrored the first, Newcastle dominant and West Ham remained lethargic. After we scored, the game started to peter out and neither side really looked like scoring until the 87th minute when Jeff Hendrick absolutely rocketed an effort into the top corner from just inside the box. A goal and an assist on debut for the Irishman!

Soon after, the final whistle blew and we had won our first game of the season since 2012. A scrappy affair at times, but a well deserved win for Steve Bruce.

There were so many positives to draw from tonight’s game. Callum Wilson was lively all night and scored on his debut. Jeff Hendrick scored one and set the other up in an industrious display down the right. Jamal Lewis looked solid defensively, constantly teased with overlapping runs and crosses into the area. Ryan Fraser will be made to wait until next week for his debut.

The old guard also stepped up – Andy Carroll won so much in the air and linked up well, proving why Bruce gave him a start. The defence was solid and kept a clean sheet, giving Darlow a much needed boost in Dubravka’s absence. The midfield duo of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden dictated the game; keeping West Ham’s creative threat to an absolute minimum.

Despite a disruptive and short pre-season, we looked a solid unit and a side boosted from the arrivals of Wilson, Lewis and Fraser in midweek.

Bring on Brighton next Sunday!

  1. Kimtoon: I had never really paid much attention to Hendrick because I have hardly watched Burnley. My gripe was some NUFC “fans” judging him before he kicked a ball. How many of them really saw him play much for Burnley?

Yes, I thought he had a very assured game.

The thing I was most impressed with was our players actually getting into the opposition box.

I thought Darlow did well. Keep it up. A bit too much hoofing but I think that was more down to instructions from Bruce and Co.

  2. That Hendrick goal. Could they have given him more time and space if they tried. Well taken but it looked like it was in slow motion until he struck it so sweetly.

  3. I really hope the Refs get a handle on this tactic of rotating who fouls St Max. They had 3 on him every time and their first instinct was to foul him, not to get the ball. The Ref needed to give an early yellow card. I have absolutely no faith that the Refs will do their job and protect St Max because for 3 years Pep has been having his players foul in rotation whenever they lose the ball upfield and they are never punished for it.

Of course, Andy could have had a red, but that’s not my point 🙂

  4. It was so strange to hear the commentators say how well we had done after the restart. We lost the last 6 games FFS.

Still dont trust Bruce when he comes up against a better manager but at least he has a decent squad now that should stay out of the relegation fight.

Totally agree Eric, i was getting so angry, time and time again he was fouled and as you say they took it in turns to do it so as not to get a card.
Dour Dave will of instructed them to do that, that’s not tactics it’s thuggery. No skill in possibly inflicting a career ending injury to a player. I don’t like it if our players do it ,let alone the opposition .
He was the most fouled player in the league today, twice as many fouls on him than any other player !
Refs need to start giving a very early yellow to stamp it out or he’ll be back in the treatment room within a couple of matches.
I said to Lews carer last night, he must be black and blue by full time, the fouls he got on him.

  6. Manquillo was excellent again too and loving Wilsons movement. Lewis also looks promising and bags of pace.
West Ham were poor, i know they hit the bar twice but they were poor overall and their next 6 games should have them really concerned.

  7. Very good performance all over the pitch. Very impressed by Hendrick – he’s exactly what we’ve needed for years. Onwards and upwards!

  8. Commentator said that at this rate St Max might take over Jack Grealish’s mantle of most fouled player. There is a massive difference though – St Max doesnt WANT to go down. Grealish has made running into an opponents leg and falling over almost an artform. If it was ice skating he would be getting marks for technical merit and artistic impression. Grealish gets on my nerves with his cheating because the lad has a lot of ability.

It is the premeditated stuff that I cannot abide. How can the Refs not see that Peps fouling after City lose the ball is a tactic or that Moyes went out to deliberately to take St Max out today? It took Atkins until midway through the second half to give a yellow when the cynical fouling had gone on all game.

It was also no coincidence that at all went on around the half way line. They dared not touch him around and in their box.

  9. West Ham are not as **** as they looked today. If you look at last season they were very inconsistent but have some good players, or at least players that cost a lot and played well elsewhere – Fabianski, Ogbonna, Soucek, Rice, Antonio, Yarmalenko, Anderson, Haller.

I still expect them to struggle but I would NOT put money on them being relegated UNLESS the next 6 games causes panic. There are at least 5 worse squads – West Brom, Fulham, Burnley, Palace, Sheffield.

Of course, if they sell Rice there will be a full on revolt.

The Sith was asked about the next 6 games in the post match interview and said they had done well against some of the bigger teams last year. You had also been crushed David. Should be fun to watch to see if he goes into a full on Sunderland-like depression.

Just happy that the PL have agreed to televise most games and I think that will be extended when they realise there will be no or very limited fans in grounds through the end of the year. Watching Moyes in meltdown is good TV. He had his head in his hands today and that is only the 1st match 🙂

  10. Eric, PL are in the position of waiting on the ok of the government to give the go ahead to let some fans back in. The irony of their long wait is not lost on me. 😉

  11. I forgot about Villa. Sorry Kimtoon. Their squad is about as bad as West Ham so they will struggle as well.

I have us finishing 12th so i expect ups and downs but we have some good players. I still dont rate Bruce but it might just be a case of him getting out of the way and letting the players play. A good season would be for us to play good football and not be in the relegation scrap.

Icing on the cake would be Villa and West Ham in the bottom 4 at least until Easter. Fighting for their lives and in turmoil for the whole season.

Mackems are favourites for promotion. I dont know how and I dont see it. So, they might be disappointed again but I dont want to see them go bust.

  12. I know a lot has been said about our forwards – and rightly so. But I was also really impressed with Lascelles and Fernandez at CB as well.
They were rock solid throughout – very composed and snuffed so much out before it got to their forward players to keep our attacks going and the pressure on them.

Darlow is a concern though, he just doesn’t look confident at all. He done nothing wrong yesterday, but keepers have a confidence boarding on arrogance and he just doesn’t. He has that look of a outfield player who’s had to go in nets coz the keeper has gone off.
Maybe with a few games under his belt that will change and he’ll settle into it a bit more. He needs to work on his mental game though and be a bit nastier I think.

  14. I said it yesterday but on the old thread.

Ashley was at the game yesterday. I wonder if it was lost on him that the players that made the biggest impact on the game were 28yr old British players with PL experience – the very players he’s actively turned away from in previous transfer windows.

I know he’s not British, but Rondon was 29/30 with PL experience – with toon experience!. I wonder if Ashley regrets spending £40m on Joelinton when he could have spent £16m on Rondon?!.

Hopefully he has learned from mistakes & he sticks with this new approach – or more hopefully this is his short term approach and he eventually gets to sell up.

  15. I think the Blackburn team will be incredibly hard to predict but that Bruce will use it as sort of an extended pre-season game to check on a few players and get some fit. My guess:

    Darlow

    Krafth Clark Dummett Ritchie

    Longstaff Barlaser

    Fraser Murphy

    Joelinton Miggy

  16. Sharpy: I thought Darlow was OK but you know my views that he is an accident waiting to happen. He has always been a decent shot stopper but he is a bundle of nerves. Yesterday he hesitated to come for crosses and luckily it didnt hurt us. Also that one shot that hit the bar he DIDNT have covered as some have said. They are wrong, his hand was 6 inches to the side of it.

He’s probably good in training because there is no pressure. Still, he did some good things and came out of his net well to kick the ball away. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Funny you should mention that he looks like an outfielder in goal because when I was watching it got me thinking about the time Beardsley had to play in goal.

  17. Harper is the goalkeeping coach now and you would think he could pass on his knowledge. This might be sacrilege but I never rated Harper. He had most of the attributes of a good goalie, was like 90% there, but had a fatal flaw. He would often be rooted to the spot and just watch the ball fly past him. Maybe it was bad positioning, I dont know. It happened so often though that I thought he was not even good enough to be number 2 even though he seemed like a nice bloke.

Still reckon Harper might help Darlow with his confidence. I think he studied sports science so he cant do much harm.

Kepa does the same at Chelsea and has been dropped even though he was the most expensive Keeper in history.

Eric – it cant be easy being back up keeper. If you are squad outfield player you still probably get 10 run outs a season – whether that be sub appearances or full games. But as a keeper you might only get 2-3 cup games if you’re lucky.
I don’t think he’s a bad keeper, limited but not bad. I don’t know if it is confidence or not, but he’s certainly not a commanding keeper & he needs to work on that as much as anything. He’s had Lascelles in front of him most of his career with them coming from Forest as well, so that should help him. Many a run of 4-5 games and he’ll look a different player ??.

  19. Did Souness really say that all NUFC fans love Bruce now?

We lost our last 6 games of last season. My best hope is that we play some decent football and finish mid-table. Hardly Keegan or Sir Bobby expectations and hardly a recipe for love.

Sept 17 Plovdiv of Bulgaria Away

    Sept 20 S’ton Away

    Sept 22 League Cup Away

    Sept 27 NUFC Home

Eric – I’m not sure what he wants though. He wants them to compete and be successful, and yet coz they are in Europa he’s twisting about the number of fixtures ?.

Wolves had a ton of games early doors last season, with a much smaller squad, but didn’t once complain.

Spurs bore me know like. They look bang average now. I think they’ll do well to finish in the top 10 nevermind top 6.

  22. I still dont believe that Joelinton cost 40 million but lets assume he did. Instead of complaining how about flipping the 2 transfers last year and adding in the sale of Perez. What if it was St Max that cost 40 mil and Joe 16 mil would we be happy? I think we would. Then we sell Perez for 30 mil when he is realistically worth 15. So the net spend would be 26 million. That is nothing in the market of a year ago.

Add in Miggy at 20 million and the latest 4 at 35 million and we have done pretty good business.

I think there is a fixation on Joe being a bust especially with people like John Gibson and SuperMac. If we look at the totality of the business we seem to have done OK. I might not have said that last week mind before we signed Wilson, Fraser and Lewis.

    Dubs
    Krafth
    Miggy
    Joelinton
    St Max
    Hendrick
    Wilson
    Lewis
    Fraser

Herd immunity seems to be the way on this with the schools and colleges going back.

The cases may be even higher in reality coz their are so many people unable to get a test. 3 people I work with were told their nearest test site was 67 miles from their home, and another drove his kids from Durham to Leeds to get tested last week.

  30. I know we have 2 games before Spurs but I watched that Amazon documentary – All or Nothing. Mourinho was a lot more hands on in training than I expected and he did set them up tactically. What surprised me though was that there was very little in-game management/changes (apart from subs). The other thing is I thought he was supposed to be an inspirational coach. From what I saw in this series that now boils down to “be nasty, be a c@nt” and “you have to want it more”. That was the gist of every team talk and half time talk.

I think if we get at them their heads will go down, especially after yesterday’s press conference where the Man U Jose returned blaming everybody but himself. Specifically throwing Deli Alli under the bus.

Their recruitment has been p!ss poor as well. Lastly, a centre half pairing of Alderwelderreid and Dier are there for the taking. Slow as molasses and not good in the air. It is like having 2 Steven Taylors without his heart. Dier in particular is a surly SOB if you go by the documentary. I hope Big Andy stays fit.

  31. So Bruce has confirmed no new injuries, and that Muto, Atsu, Saviet, Lazaar and Aaron’s have been told to find new clubs. Also said that Fraser and Clark will get starts against Bburn with wholesale changes – I expect the team to look something like this:

    ——————— Darlow ——————-
    Kraft — Lascelles – Clark — Dummett
    ——– Longstaff — Longstaff ———
    —————— Barlaser ———————-
    Fraser ————————-——- Murphy
    —————— Joelinton —————-

  32. I wouldn’t mind him playing Joelinton up front in this game either, coz I think it would highlight we still need to loan a CF ideally.

If any injuries to Carroll or Wilson and we are reliant on Joelinton again as a forward.

I’ve got no issue with Joelinton playing that left side when ASM needs to be rested. I think he could do ok out there as it seems to be his preferred position. He’s not a CF and has never claimed to be. I do hope we can bring another forward in before the window closes.

I know I left Almiron off my starting 11 above, but he’d be off the bench again for me. We know what we get with him, so why not take a look at Barlaser to see what he’s about.
Almiron can always come on and turn the game back in our favour if needed.

  33. Joelinton actually looked like he could control the ball on Saturday which is a step up from the end of last year. There have been a few players who have had bad first seasons and turned out to be good – Firmino, Son. There have been a helluva lot more who continued to be shyte – Slimani, Mutu, Shevchenko even.

Hopefully Wilson and St Max stay fit and we can ease Joe in.

  35. It is clear now that the Fat Man is playing the long game with the Premier League. The transfers last week were to ensure we stay in the PL as this process slowly grinds on. I think it took about 6 months for Citeh’s case to conclude (favourably). Interesting to see that he has hired specialists in sports law AND international law.

From what I read when this was in full swing the Owners and Directors test had very narrow definitions. It also seems the PL deliberately dragged this out to put off buyers who are bad publicity averse.

The influence of the Big 6 and Qatar will be hard to explain. Qatar even wrote to all PL clubs trying to block the takeover. Also, there is bound to be a paper trail at the PL. I am not a lawyer but from watching cop shows and My Cousin Vinny ( 🙂 ) I do know there is a process of “discovery” where the defendants have to release documents during a lawsuit that otherwise they can keep secret.

  36. Interesting developments though. The Saudi’s had said this was dead in a written statement and said it was for economic reasons. That could mean Ashley had put up his asking price or the general state of the world economy and value of assets. But really, what is 50 million to them anyway. Stavely didnt seem to give up though so that was all a bit confusing.

I dont know what to think now but I doubt Ashley is after compensation. I suspect he wants to resurrect the deal (which was dead, they said so). I now expect it to go through on Good Friday 2021.

I dont think this will disrupt the players like has been mentioned in past takeovers. This seems par for the course, a way of life at NUFC now so they will just get on with it.

I am guessing this is what Fatty was doing at the West Ham game. Taking these lawyers out for a steak dinner after the match.

Eric – I’m hoping the new additions take some of the pressure off both Joelinton and Almiron.
There was a lot of expectation and pressure on both players last season because of both their price tags and they were our only hope up front (along with ASM but he seemed to thrive on the pressure).
Less pressure and played in his preferred position may see a better Joelinton – but I hope both he & Almiron has practiced their finishing with that spare time they have.

They are obsessed with playing out from the back but do not have the quality of City or Liverpool so we must be able to get after them. That;s how Chelsea got their first goal.

If we can somehow get 2 goals I dont see them getting more than 1. Big ask for us as we averaged 1 a game last year, but then again we played Joe as the number 9 for most of the season.

I did pay attention to Jose’s press conference and he was acting like it was a terrible performance so I watched the game again and paid more attention. It was an even game but Kane was a bit off the pace. I think it is part Jose being in a bad mood and part him wanting Levy to stump up for new players. Maybe even a bit of reverse psychology.

I have since seen the journos reports and they took their cue from Jose and all trashed Spurs. Really, there was not much in it and if we think they are as **** as the journos and Jose said we are in for a surprise when we play them. Their schedule suits us though as I have said already.

They can be got at though. Slow centre backs and play too narrow. They had to use Son on the wing.

Stu – yeah, Ashley isn’t one for wasting money. He will have lost some during lockdown with his businesses being closed – so I don’t imagine he would spend money on these top lawyers if he didn’t think he had a case.
But maybe more telling is that these lawyers make a habit of winning cases – and if they have read through it and took it on, well that suggests to me the PL will have questions to answer.

Part of me just wanted this to go away, be done with it now and concentrate on the new season with our good new signings.
But I’m pleased that they are pushing on with it now to be honest. The PL should be held to account – and something tells me this could blow up in there face.

Great start to the season. Couldn’t watch the game as I was too drunk on a stag do but was a pleasant surprise the next day….

Also for once I’m rooting for Jabba. I think the PL are about to be exposed and it won’t be pretty. Their silly games will be exposed.

    Totally agree

  53. We have to be able to shift Atsu and Yedlin surely? THey would be an upgrade for the likes of Fulham, West Brom and Burnley who have Championship squads. Their fees would be cheap as well, I cant see us asking for more than 2-3 million for each. I reckon Dyche could instill some discipline in Yedlin, maybe even convert him to a winger. Atsu needs consistency but he is one of these in-betweeners where is is too good for the Championship and not good enough for the PL. Still better than a lot of the Fulham players though from what I saw against Arsenal.

  54. Dont know why Norwich wouldnt take Murphy back either. He would probably only cost 3 million and would be immediately comfortable there. He only has a year left on his deal so they could negotiate a bit of a reduced wage but an extended contract.

  55. I would keep Murphy as backup though. You look at last year when we thought we were set at centre half. We had 6 if you include Dummett. Then suddenly we had 1.

It has been well documented on here how Bruce has had injury crises at every club. He wont admit it has anything to do with him but it is a fact. Murphy seems a decent back-up and we should be thinking about NUFC and not HIS career.

EXCL: There are currently no tests at all available in ANY of the top 10 Covid-19 hotspots in England, LBC can reveal. No walk-in, drive-through or home tests available for people in Bolton, Salford, Bradford, Blackburn, Oldham, Preston, Pendle, Rochdale, Tameside or Manchester.

Shocking, this government really should of been prepared for this second wave and the increase in uptake for tests.
Also not good having to drive miles to get tested, how can it be safe that people running fevers and feeling awful have to drive for a couple of hours for a test.

  57. Kimtoon from earlier. Trump is stoking up so much fear, it is surreal. Off to Oregon next month which is an open carry state which means that there are militia on the streets of Portland with assault weapons and the Police are powerless to stop them (actually there are videos of the police encouraging them). There are evacuation zones for these wildfires and regular citizens have set up road blocks and again have assault weapons. Their reasoning is that they want to stop looters getting to their homes. This time the police moved them on, not because of the guns but because of the barricade check points.

I think the police have an almost impossible job in these situations as well as with gangs on the south side of Chicago but Trump is hurting rather than helping. He keeps threatening to send the army in which has never happened in the history of this country.

Imagine having 20 guys with AK47s in the Bigg Market and the police not being able to arrest them or even move them on. That is what is happening in parts of Portland.

I have changed my trip to only the coast mainly to avoid wildfires but I have also paid close attention to where protests are and would avoid there like the plague just like I avoid the S and W side of Chicago.

I think the looters and those setting fire to buildings are morons but I am more worried about people with assault weapons. They could mow down 20 people in a minute as has been seen with the school shootings.

  59. In response to the Joelinton article on here. I am actually hopeful that Joelinton will get better this season as the pressure is lifted off him and he is played in his correct position and not as a hold up striker with his back to goal. However, there are certain things that cannot be denied.

He scored 2 goals in 37 starts. Worse than Joselu FFS.

He actually got worse as the season wore on. In the end, he couldnt even control the ball hit to his feet. When the ball went to him in the box you were assured he would scuff his shot. You would think he would settle but he got worse. You would think that not having the pressure of the crowd would help him, but he got worse.

I could go on, but… clean slate and all that.

ERIC its a bit sick of Trump to tell those in the blazing fires to say dont worry it will soon cool down ffs

A lot are living in tents, school buildings and campgrounds and their houses have burned down. I am not going anywhere near where the fires were in Oregon. They will be out by the time I am there but there will be so much cleanup. I am going for the beautiful scenery and that does not involve charred devastation. Trump has a tin ear, no empathy and a lot in this country think he says inappropriate things on purpose because it stirs up his dumbfck supporters.
