“Really?!” – Bruce reveals the bold claim his friend made after West Ham win & hails ‘terrific’ trio

Steve Bruce has revealed that a friend of his told him on Monday morning that our opening day performance in Saturday’s win at West Ham was “the best we’ve played in 2-3 years!”.

It was certainly a night to remember, as we played our most positive football of the Steve Bruce era, creating chances and coming away from London worthy winners – not to forget the dream debuts for our new signings!

Here’s Bruce’s response to his mate’s comment – something he’s struggling to agree with despite the brilliant win!

“Really? I’m not so sure about that!

“But look, with the players we’ve brought in and the players we brought in in the last 12 months, the squad is bigger and better and we’ll try to be the way we were against West Ham.

“It might be a bit different against the real big big boys of the League but that’s the way we want to try and be.”

Although Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick took the headlines, Jamal Lewis also really impressed the gaffer in his first game, with him describing the left-back’s display as “terrific” against the dangerous Jarrod Bowen.

Here’s what he had to say about all three:

“I thought the young left back had a terrific game for his debut and for somebody so young”

I don’t personally think it was the best we’ve played in 2 or 3 years, but it was a complete transformation from some of last year’s performances, and the new boys definitely caught the eye.

It was such a refreshing game, instilling so much positivity.

Hopefully it continues against Brighton and we go into that one on the back of a Carabao Cup win over Blackburn!
