Sheffield Utd eye surprise move for NUFC star if they fail to sign Steve Bruce target – Report

According to the Daily Mail, Sheffield United are interested in signing Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle.

The striker isn’t expected to return until December after injuring his knee in pre-season, however the report claims that Chris Wilder still ‘retains an interest’ in the 29-year-old.

Interestingly, Adrian Kajumba’s piece states that the Blades’ primary target is Liverpool talent Rhian Brewster – a player who is believed to be on Steve Bruce’s radar as a potential loan target.

The Mail state that both Sheffield United and Crystal Palace are planning to step up their interest in the England U-21 star – who Liverpool will sell for £20m if a ‘buy-back clause’ is included – however it seems Wilder may turn his attentions to Gayle should they miss out on the 20-year-old.

With Gayle now in the final year of his contract at St James’ Park, it could be the perfect time to sell up and use any funds received to sigh a player able to compete with Callum Wilson, Andy Carroll and Joelinton up top.

Bruce always speaks highly of the former Palace poacher, however constant injuries and his contract situation mean we may well cash in while we can.

Who knows. I struggle to see Sheffield United going for a striker who’s not yet fit – surely they’d just wait until January on Gayle – but it seems they are admirers and are interested regardless of his current situation on the sidelines.
