Nobby Solano gives mixed review of Rodrigo Vilca as Peru star closes in on NUFC move

Nobby Solano has spoken with a degree of hesitation regarding our potential signing Rodrigo Vilca.

The former NUFC winger praised the 21-year-old’s technical ability, but warned that he is still in the very early stages of his development.

He also spoke with caution about the youngster’s consistency and physicality, insisting that he’d take time to adjust to English football after just one season in senior football in Peru.

Solano is currently the assistant manager of the Peruvian national side and Vilca has been training with the team recently following his first call up, so Nobby will have been watching the attacking midfielder closely and has provided a comprehensive assessment of the Toon-bound talent.

Here’s what he had to say to The Chronicle about the potential signing in full:

“He’s been in training with the national side and he’s very technically gifted.

“But he’s still in the process of development.

“It’s only in the last season that he played first-team football at Deportivo Municipal.

“We are just keeping an eye on how he’s doing, it is still early as he is yet to get an international cap.

“It is looking like a player with prospects with a project ahead of him.

“He needs to show development, it is not about five or 10 games it is about consistency.

“I was surprised but happy to see him linked with Newcastle.

“It’s another Peruvian player who could one day play in the Premier League.

“You need experience before you play in the Premier League.

“It’s a big challenge.

“From my own experience, I would prefer to see the boy play some first-team football on loan or with the Under-23s.

“Maybe he could even play another year in Peru if a deal is completed.

“It’s a different level for the boy and for anybody to make such a huge step up so quickly.

“What we’re hearing is that his people and Newcastle have a future plan for him.”

This comes following news claims from Alax Nixon, who reports that the 21-year-old Peruvian is on his way to Tyneside ahead of a £120,000 move:

Vilca is certainly an unknown entity in our part of the world and my first impression is that he’s somewhat a diamond in the rough.

However, multiple sources have commented on his exciting raw ability and for a few hundred thousand he’s undoubtedly worthy of a chance.
