NUFC’s dilemma ahead of Rodrigo Vilca deal – Should young duo also be loaned out?

With widespread reports suggesting Rodrigo Vilca could be loaned straight out if and when he swaps Peru for St James’ Park, I wondered what this could mean for the likes of Dan Barlaser and Matty Longstaff.

Vilca, if he comes, has huge potential and is already at 21 a full Peruvian International following his first call up recently.

It’s interesting that Transfermarkt.co.uk assess his value at 200,000 euros and we’re reported to be going to spend £120,000 to bring him to the Toon. It will seem a price that is a no-brainer gamble if he proves to be as good as a few Peruvian pundits are saying he is. Well worth the punt.

Midfield is an area where we have lots of options and if Vilca arrived it sounds as though he may well be loaned out straight away and possibly to a European Club. £250,000 to me is not a lot of money in football terms and could garner us lots more in the future.

Which in a roundabout way brings me to Dan Barlaser and Matty Longstaff. Would these two be better off going out on loan?

For me, Matty should as he’s young enough but good enough to gain vital experience in the Championship and I think that would be a good move for him.

Particularly with the way Bruce intends to play. There’s Shelvey, Hayden, Hendrick, and brother Sean in front of him for two positions.

Barlaser is an undoubted talent but has he enough to make it to the very top? He’s 23 now and will be 24 in January. With three loans already under his belt at Crewe, Accrington, and Rotherham he probably doesn’t want another loan spell. He probably feels now, if ever, is his time.

A fourth loan to me is a lot for a player with potential and almost seems as if we’re hoping that his potential might earn him a permanent move and pocket us a bit of money.

Perhaps though I’m reading a bit too much into this, as it could be that his make or break moment is based on how well he does on loan in the Championship across 2020/21 after only testing himself in the third and fourth tier so far in his career.

Remember too we have the highly rated duo of Mo Sangare and Tom Allan out on loan at Accrington and both are already contributing well at Stanley. More potential gaining experience.

Barlaser has that technical ability but for me doesn’t have the age on his side that the others do. Those already on loan, those that might go out on loan and those that might come in and then fly out!

A conundrum for Bruce most definitely but for once, one that is probably making him smile rather than frown as it’s a nice one to have to solve having so much potential on-hand.
