Newcastle United have confirmed that Dan Barlaser has completed a permanent move to Rotherham, with U-23 star Elias Sorensen also joining Dutch side Almere City a season-long loan.
Starting with Barlaser, this sees the Academy product’s 14-year spell on Tyneside come to an end, with Bruce accepting that, at 23, he had to leave in order to play regularly at senior level.
The Gateshead-born midfielder will now get that in the form of newly-promoted Championship side Rotherham, who’ve been desperate to re-sign him after a hugely impressive loan spell with the Millers in 2019/20.
Here’s what Bruce has told NUFC.co.uk following his move to Yorkshire:
“I wish Dan the very, very best of luck,”
“He had a wonderful loan spell last year. He’s got to an age where I think he needs to play, and I hope he goes and has a wonderful career.
“He’s been with us since he was nine years old and I wish him the best of luck.”
On the plus side, The Chronicle report that we have a 50% sell-on clause inserted in the deal, meaning we’ll receive a hefty fee should he impress and seal a big-money move in years to come.
Elsewhere, Danish talent Elias Sorensen has departed in what can only be described as an ‘interesting’ loan move.
A loan move in itself makes sense, but a drop down to the second tier of Dutch football perhaps shows how much he’s struggled to kick on since that prolific season at U-23 level a few years ago.
After awful spells with Blackpool and Carlisle in recent seasons, let’s hope Sorensen has much more joy out in Holland!
He clearly needs a confidence boost and regular minutes at senior level, so it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on with a side looking to gain promotion to the Eredivisie.
Good luck to both!

Pleased for Barlaser coz he deserves regular first team football. But there’s another one of our youngsters sold without being given a proper crack at the first team.
We face another in Ivan Toney in the next round of the cup. He’s hoping that one doesn’t bite us.
