There’s an old deadline day joke that goes. “It’s transfer deadline day or as it’s known in Newcastle …………. Monday.”
Well perhaps there’s another as earlier today, Sky Sports News were reporting that Christian Atsu, Henri Saivet, Achraaf Lazaar and Roland Aaron’s can all leave? Is this news or history? Or have SSN just got this on loop from all other deadline days?
Now I do have a sprinkling of sympathy for Atsu and Aarons but the other two? Don’t get me started!
Atsu has just fallen down the pecking order and whilst a decent backup player was never ever good enough to be a regular starter. He did have his moments and gave us as good a service as his ability beckoned but he always looked a player better suited to the Championship.
Aarons is, was and perhaps will always be blighted by the injury bug. There’s no doubting there’s a player in there somewhere, but we’ve only ever seen it in rare flashes. Before his first injury his searing pace and potential made him look like a player with top potential. Sadly, afterwards it’s never happened and probably never will.
Both Saivet and Lazaar have had a couple of false dawns where it seems we’ve given them a chance merely because we couldn’t get rid of them only to find after that chance why we were trying too. Seriously these two must rank amongst the worst ever.
He could make a case for Remy Cabella and Florian Thauvin but at least they were good enough to get moves away and have come back well at their level with Thauvin even making the French World Cup Squad.
But Saivet and Lazaar? We look as if we’re going to be stuck with them forever or for now, with 3 hours to go in the transfer market till January at least. Surely, we should just pay them off and cut them loose?
So, the not quite so fantastic four look destined to stay and not be part of the 25-man squad. They’ll continue to get paid of course and that’s a travesty – as they’re all believed to be on between £20-£35,000 each.
NUFC need to look at themselves carefully in the future and avoid ridiculous farces like this as a farce it is.
Oh, and did someone mention Lejeune? Four complete games already for Alaves. Well, at least he’s getting the minutes that we sent him out for even if he may have got exactly that here at Newcastle United.
Good help us if Wilson, ASM or even Lewis, Lascelles or Fernandez pick long-term injuries!
