‘Like a new signing’ – Fabian Schar has just helped explain why we signed no one on deadline day

On deadline day, otherwise known a ‘Monday’ for Newcastle United fans, we initially hoped to see a centre-back arrive.

At the time, Fernandez was our only fully fit option, with Schar set for a scan on his shoulder and Lascelles, Dummett and Clark missing last weekend’s game through injury.

Steve Bruce has since confirmed that the latter trio should be back in training next week, however that would still leave us without Lejeune – who’s been loaned to Alaves for the season – and left not knowing whether Schar could be set for another spell on the sidelines after going off in Saturday’s win holding the shoulder that had kept him out over the past three months.

Thankfully, the Swiss star has all but confirmed the good news on his situation, confirming on Tuesday that he’s now back with the national team ahead of the international break – suggesting the scans Steve Bruce talked about showed he was fine and injury-free!

After all, if he’d suffered a setback or done damage to the shoulder that he had surgery on a few months ago, he would not be out on international duty with Switzerland.

So, with Lascelles, Clark and Dummett due back in training next Monday at it appearing though Schar is fine after his worrying withdrawal against Burnley, it seems as though Bruce didn’t feel the need to dip into the market on deadline day for a last minute centre-back on loan.

Not only that, If Schar can find the form that saw him become one of our star players under Rafa Benitez, he really will seem “like a new signing” for Steve Bruce!

Let’s hope our Swiss dreamboat comes through the international break unscathed and all the better for a few competitive fixtures after several months out and a lacklustre Project Restart, with him thankfully looking much better while he was on the pitch in that 3-1 win over Burnley.

Up next for him, Spain and Germany in the UEFA Nations League!
