Report reveals the NUFC star we were willing to sell this summer – Is this his last season at SJP?

According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, NUFC were ‘open to offers’ for the out of favour Fabian Schar over the summer.

Schar – who was one of our best performer’s in the 18/19 season – has seen his stock massively drop over the last 12 months.

Waugh claims that Bruce isn’t convinced that Schar can perform as part of a back four – and he could soon become our 4th choice centre-back once Ciaran Clark is fully fit.

He’s also got less than a year left on his current deal and a new one seems unlikely given his recent lack of game time, meaning this could well be his last season at St James’ Park.

Given he’ll leave on a free next summer as things stand, the club may look to cash in on him while they can in January – although that could depend on our ability to bring in some much needed cover at centre-back.

I think we can all agree that Schar’s recent performances are nothing like the player who we saw in his first season. In fact, he looked almost completely disinterested during Project Restart.

Although we all know what a classy operator he can be on his day, I wouldn’t be too disappointed if he would happen to leave.

I’d still like to think that he can turn his NUFC career around and once again become the player that we all admired during his first year, but with him approaching 30 and out of Bruce’s first-team plans, it seems so unlikely that he’s handed a new deal.

One to watch in January – especially if we can bring in a centre-back to allow for his exit?
