Adam Armstrong and Ivan Toney just can’t stop scoring – making our decision to sell both on the cheap two years ago all the more frustrating.
It’s easy to say in hindsight and perhaps they were never going to reach their potential had they stayed at St James’ Park – even if they were handed more of a chance as talented youngsters – however their form in 2020 really is outstanding.
In fact, both have just moved ahead of Mo Salah (16) in the scoring charts for English league goals in 2020.
Toney’s goal against Norwich last night takes him to 19, while Armstrong is on the same tally for the calendar year after four goals in as many games.
- Ivan Toney – 19
- Adam Armstrong – 19
- Mo Salah – 16
- Danny Ings – 14
- Said Benrahma – 14
As you can see below, the pair are also out on their own in the Championship top scorer charts, with Armstrong (9) now just ahead of Toney (8) after another brace on Tuesday night:
Quite incredibly, the pair have scored more between them (92!) than we have as a team (88) since we sold them both in 2018. OK, those goals weren’t in the Premier League, but it’s a pretty tragic stat nonetheless!
Maybe both just really didn’t look good enough a few years ago and were only ever going to come good with the right permanent move away, a new home and regular game time, but it’s frustrating that two top young English talents now tearing up the EFL were sold on the cheap and replaced with the likes of Slimani and Joselu.
It won’t be long until both are back in the Premier League for me – whether that’s through promotion with Blackburn or Brentford or a sizeable bid from a top flight side next summer!

I’ve scored 23 goals this year, in the Malaysian 4th division.
Does that make me better than Mo Salah?
They’re both playing in a lower league. A league where Dwight Gayle excelled. Hardly an indicator of excellence.

Who said they were better than Mo Salah?
Both look better footballers than Gayle and both are significantly younger. Annoys me that anyone who does well in the Championship is immediately told to look at Gayle.
Why can’t we just accept they’re doing well?

They are both doing really well!
Both are likely to bite Newcastle in the backside and Toney at Brentford sooner rather than later!
