Newcastle 2-1 Everton: Wilson at it again as much improved Mags earn deserved win

Newcastle’s games have been fun to watch this season, whether you are live streaming on Ladbrokes or elsewhere online, and today’s game was a perfect example of it.

A much-improved second half performance, a solid defensive display and another St James’ Park brace from Callum Wilson helped us to a well deserved 2-1 win over Everton today!

A depleted yet high-flying Toffees side created a nervy final five minutes via a late goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, however we come away worthy winners in the end – and it’s not often we’ve been able to say that under Steve Bruce!

He deserves credit today for getting it right and setting us up well, with the victory moving us 10 points clear of the drop zone, just two points from 2nd and into the top 10.

Steve Bruce stuck with a 5-3-1-1 and named only one change from the side that excruciatingly scrapped for a point against Wolves a week ago.

Sean Longstaff replaced Ryan Fraser as part of a three-man midfield featuring himself, Hendrick and Almiron, with ASM in a free role and Wilson up top.

Jamaal Lascelles passed a late fitness test to continue at the heart of our five-man defence, while Jacob Murphy started for the second Premier League game in a row – again in his new role as an attacking wing-back.

As we knew they would, Everton fielded a weekend team with Rodriguez, Digne, Coleman and Richarlison all out, while out of form Jordan Pickford was dropped to the bench after a string of poor performances.

All things considered, I was feeling pretty optimistic ahead of kick-off!

It was a cagey opening to the game with neither team looking as if they were in any sort of rhythm. We had some decent spells of possession, but our attacking play was laboured in what was a slow and uneventful start to proceedings.

We attempted to play out from the back in the opening exchanges and a few bits of dodgy distribution from Karl Darlow could’ve cost us if it wasn’t for Everton’s inability to pounce on his mistake or a strong challenge or two from Federico Fernandez.

We then opted to go back to a long-ball approach as our midfield struggled to find ASM – which predictably failed as it meant that Callum Wilson was forced to feed off scraps against two big centre-backs.

To my surprise, a brilliant piece of attacking football and the moment of the first half presented us with a chance that we really should’ve given us the lead on the half hour mark.

Miguel Almiron got the ball in his own half and drove down the left-hand side, bursting past Andre Gomes and Allan before playing in Callum Wilson down the left. He then burst inside and slid an inch perfect ball into the path of Allan Saint-Maximin who had the goal at his mercy with only the keeper to beat. Unfortunately, his tame effort was comfortably saved by Olsen and the moment of the half soon passed us by.

The half-time whistle blew and we went into the break 0-0. A solid defensive display, but one brilliant counter-attack side it was tough to watch and pretty flat. Fortunately, Everton were just as bad and the game was still there for the taking.

On a slightly more positive note, I was impressed by three individual performances. Miguel Almiron was a nuisance at both ends, Callum Wilson looked lively and full of energy (despite his lack of service) and Fernandez came up trumps with a string of important blocks and tackles.

The second-half started slowly, but the game exploded into life – at least in an attacking sense – in the 54th minute.

We won a corner which Callum Wilson got on the end of ahead of Andre Gomes – who was really slow to react. The Portuguese midfielder left in a trailing leg which brought down Wilson, and the referee awarded us with a penalty!

Wilson was made to wait for what felt like an age due to a VAR check, but he once again exerted nerves of steel as he calmly slotted the ball into the net past the helpless Olsen. 1-0!

It could’ve been two just moments after. Some brilliant play between Murphy and Wilson resulted in Sean Longstaff getting the ball no more than 10 yards out from goal. He then struck a fierce effort at goal and I was left scratching my head after it was astoundingly saved by Olsen.

Longstaff really deserved a goal this afternoon. He seemed sharp, covered ground well, his passing was crisp and he looked as though he’d got his confidence back!

Everton began to grow into the game and soon after *that* Longstaff chance, Gylfi Sigurdsson whipped a brilliant ball into the box which met the head of the lethal Calvert-Lewin. Luckily, his header was straight at Darlow who easily saved.

Saint-Maximin looked affected by an earlier knock so Bruce chose to replace him with Ryan Fraser – who made an immediate impact.

Jamal Lewis collected the ball in his own half and instantly curled a perfectly weighted ball down the line and around the Everton defence – putting Ryan Fraser in on goal. The Scotsman beat Mina for pace, drove into the box and his deflected cross found Callum Wilson at the back-post, who only had to tap the ball home!

2-0 and that’s already Callum Wilson’s sixth goal in just seven games this season. What did he tell us? Wilson and Fraser = goals!

We looked set to cruise to a comfortable victory, but just after six minutes of added time were signalled, we unforgivably gave Everton the chance to steal a point.

Iwobi drilled the ball across the face of goal towards Calvert-Lewin, who easily drifted in between Lascelles and Fernandez before poking the ball past Darlow. A nervy few minutes remained!

Karl Darlow had a heroic few minutes as the pressure built. He excellently tipped a looping Bernard cross over the bar, and then excellently claimed the final corner of the game to secure the three points!

It wasn’t always pretty, but we defended well, caused problems on the counter and played some decent football in the second half – a nervy end but a brilliant three points in a game that saw this 5-3-1-1 system show signs of real potential after that decent point but drab display at Molineux.

We were solid defensively – looking MUCH better than the side who shipped four to Man Utd a few weeks ago – the wing-backs were really effective at both ends, Federico Fernandez was rock solid, Miguel Almiron a constant livewire and Sean Longstaff much improved in midfield.

Most importantly, however, we’ve finally got a new talisman in Wilson. He’s going to be so important for us throughout this season and is already proving what a brilliant piece of business he’ll be for Bruce. He just always looks like scoring and is a constant pest up top.

Bring on Southampton next Friday!

  1. Pickford’s reaction when Olsen didnt save the penalty was odd. It was like he thought he would have saved it and Olsen should have done better. He really is an odious little pr!ck. Hopefully this signals the second extinction of T-Rex (arms).

Southgate has to notice that he was dropped. Carlo said he was rested but he was dropped. The only reason he is still in the side is that Everton do not really have a recognized back-up. Olsen did well today but he hasnt really done anything in his career to warrant being 1st choice in the PL.

  2. Hopefully this heralds the return of the old Sean Longstaff. I never thought it was confidence with him, I thought he was just taking a lot longer to get over his bad injury. We really could do with him back on form because Shelvey is too hot and cold to rely on.

  3. Big discussion on US TV about Pickford. Tim Howard, ex-Everton, thinks this is the beginning of the end and even though he will be back next week Howard says he needs a mistake free run of 10 games to keep his place. Howard was saying he needs to calm down and that the Everton defense seemed more confident in Olsen. I never really got why Pickford was always berating his defense when obviously he was the worst player in it and needed to calm down. Olly said he acted like he had had 10 red bulls before every game 🙂

I have been saying he would cost England a game in a tournament for more than 2 years so I am really happy. His personality and the fact he is a Mackem dont help either. Funny, I dont have the same animosity towards Jordan Henderson, so it is not just a Mackem thing.

  4. Eric – I thought Longstaff played really well today as did Almiron – I was really impressed with Almiron today. He played a different role in the team in that central midfield 3 and was really disciplined getting back into position – and he’s always a danger running with the ball.
Hendrick didn’t do much either way really – he did ok.
Thought Murphy was excellent – really seems to suit that position & he & Lewis are good balance out wide.

Thought everyone was good for a 7 but Almiron, Murphy & Wilson were stand out – Wilson just pipping it for me.

  5. Sharpy: people never really appreciate that some players take longer to get over injuries than others. Sean had an ACL, right? That used to end players’ careers. I think it ended Tony Green’s and Brian Clough’s and many others. I don’t think Lejeune has recovered either.

Remember Shearer when he was younger had electric pace then the injuries slowed him down. I am hopeful that doesnt happen to Sean but just saying some injuries take their toll and we shouldnt expect players to be back to their old selves first game back – at least not all of the time, and they deserve a bit of patience. Especially if they are a Geordie.

  6. Also, how do we get Fraser on the pitch? Good problem to have as there will inevitably be injuries.

  7. I really believe Bruce wants to find a better balance & get us playing better – he just hasn’t had a clue how to achieve it and has been so head strong about moving away the ‘Rafas formation’ that he hasn’t considered it’s his best way to achieve it – especially with the players he has.

Defensively I think we look so solid with the 3 CBs – and Schar & Fernandez can ping the ball about better than they maybe get credit for – certainly Fernandez.

I give him credit for trying Murphy at wing back – I’m sure any of us suggested or even considered that one. Lewis is still settling in but will be very good I think.

Midfielders can operate in that formation just fine, so if he can get the balance right with the forwards I think he could get close to cracking it.

Eric – the £50m Longstaff that Man Utd wanted had the legs to get round the pitch for 90mins. He had a great engine & a great work rate.
Everything his game was about was damaged with that injury & he has a long way back. I think he’s had to change his game a bit when he came back and obviously looked a shadow of himself.
But he played with a lot of energy today – I think it helped him with 3 in midfield today & Miggy running as much as he does. It was just him & Hayden before his injured, so the 3 helped today.
I think the lad still has lot to offer the team & I like him getting further forward – I think he could be good for a few goals with late runs into the box like he was making today.

Regarding Fraser – I think it depends who we play. Better times I’d have Longstaff, Hayden & Almiron as a 3 man midfield. Teams we fancy our chances against I’d play Longstaff & Hayden in the midfield with Fraser and ASM behind Wilson.

  9. I think I am one of the few that dont want Bruce to fail. His gobshytery winds me up a bit when he describes something that we clearly did not see on the pitch. But most managers see an alternative reality. What really gets on my t!ts though is the pundits who are supposed to tell it like it is defend him however we play. If he has stumbled on a formation that suits our personnel then I will be happy. I will repeat, play the wingbacks as wing backs and that will allow us to have defensive mids shielding the backline. And press up the pitch more so we can actually cause the other team problems rather than always be thinking what they will do to us. It is not rocket science.

      (Quote)

  10. I will do a bit of what most other NUFC blogs do and compare Bruce and Rafa.

You know, Rafa stumbled on the Longstaff/Hayden combo through injuries and fans make out like he is a genius. If Brucie also stumbles on a formation, is he a genius 🙂 Remember we were totally shyte until Miggy arrived and Rafa stumbled upon the Longstaff/Hayden combo!!!

      (Quote)

  11. And… I told you Everton were not as good as the pundits made out. They praised them to the heavens after the Spurs game but I watched that game twice and there was not much in it. They shaded it but Jose played some mindgames and the gullible pundits went along like the sheep they are. Even with their returning players, Everton are about 8th. Better than us, but not the worldbeaters the media want them to be.

  12. That’s why I went with us getting a result today. I like Malcolm McDonald but he went for a 3-0 loss even when he saw who they had out. Sharpy and Olly had us not losing as well so fair play to them.

Eric – Everton were worse than I expected them to be today. Lots of stray passes & poor play – there was one shot of Carlo on the sidelines throwing his hands in the air at one stage.

But then I watched Man Utd v Arsenal – and with all of the money they have spent, neither looked great. Man Utd in particular had most of their super stars out there and they created very little – it was as hard a game to watch as ours and both had spent a lot more than us.
City and Lpool have really struggled so far this season – I can’t say I’ve enjoyed watching them either really.

It’s not been a great start to a season, which makes the PPV charges even more BS.

      (Quote)

  14. I’m bored of the Man Utd pundits as well. Every win & OGS has turned it all around & is doing a fantastic job – proving all the doubters wrong.
But loose a game & the recruiting is all wrong, there are no leaders, the clubs going backwards … blah blah blah.

Keane, Neville & Evra bang on about Ole being the right man for the job when they win, yet the same cheerleaders become his harshest critic the second they loose a game.

It p!ssed me off how much the built that game up before our kick off as well. Why don’t they discuss NUFC or any team playing outside the top 4-6 teams. I know why, coz it’s a corrupt organisation who want the break away league – but it still p!sses me off.

In a game just does not cut it,the game is about movement and pace and skill not staying in the middle of the pitch trying to find a thirty yd pass.Frazer needs to play on the right hand side l know he is left footed but we need his pace or on the left and put Miggy on the right that imo brings good pace though out the team,Ime sure maxi can play behind Wison

Ice – I’d sell him mate. He’s not the midfielder we need & when he’s not in the team we really don’t miss him.

What’s really disappointing is that we allowed Dan Barlaser to leave in the last window & he’s doing really well at Rotherham. I know it’s the Championship rather than the PL – but he never got a chance.
I think he’s a better all round midfielder that Shelvey.

I’d sell him & get a real midfield enforced in.

Fernandez & Clark are both 31 and I think Dummett is 29 – so we need to start thinking about some younger CBs anyway.

  26. I dont see how Fraser gets on if Bruce stick with this system. He would have to rotate the squad and one of Miggy or St Max would be on the bench. If he rotated for St Max and we played badly there would be hell to pay even if St Max came on as a sub.

We will see what happens at Southampton. I am sure he will play the same system. They might be without Ings which would help. Also, dont give any free kicks away as Ward Prowse is the best in the PL, not just the direct FKs but whipping them in from the flanks. I doubt it will be long before the comparisons to Beckham start up.

  27. On Shelvey, I have written many times about being in two minds about him. We need another player to step up to KEEP him out and we need some more good results whilst he is out so that Bruce isnt tempted to play him. Hopefully Sean Longstaff will return to form.

On the other hand Shelvey was playing with a hernia so we can cut him some slack. The problem is that when he plays everything seems to have to go through him and Bruce plays him too deep which exposes his defensive liabilities. I would never play him as “quarterback” but up the field I can see him starting some games still.

  28. Is everybody now OK with Bruce? I am going to need a lot more evidence than a decent performance against a subdued Everton. Specifically, I need to see us NOT set up ultra defensively against the assumed top 6. Man U are in 15th and we gave them too much respect and all Bruce did was make excuses.

Man U are a strange team. They beat PSG and Leipsig and lose to Palace and get slaughtered by Spurs. I also see their fans have turned on Pogba. He really is a liability. Capable of great bits of skill but only influences 1 in 5 games. It is like buying a player from youtube clips. On there he would look great but they wouldnt include him giving away 2 penalties and misplacing 10 yard passes. I am also sick of pundits making excuses calling him a world cup winner. He was outplayed by Sissoko and that was before Poch switched Moussa to a defensive mid. Also Stepane Guivarch won a world cup.

  29. And since it is quiet, I’ll get back to Pickford. I watched the game again and it was noticeable how calm Olsen was. When he made a great save against Longstaff he didnt immediately get up and start barking at the team like a certain TRex Mackem always does. He’s there to do a job and he did it. That is another thing I hate about Pickford, his histrionics. He’s a total pr!ck and his team mates must be sick of him.

I thought Darlow played well again. He doesnt have that deer in the headlights look about him anymore. I am glad i was wrong about him. His decision making when coming out for failed backpasses is much better and he seems better coming for crosses, although he did fumble once.

Ice – I agree mate & Fernandez has been one of our best players since he joined – so I’m certainly not suggesting he’s over the hill or needs replacing at all. I’ve always thought Clark has done just fine when he plays too.
I just mean we don’t want to get into a position where we need to be replacing 2 or 3 players in the same position at the same time.

Eric – likewise mate. The problem for me is that he’s played 4 or 5 different ways already this season & has been messing round with the playing staff too much – for example, at RB he has already played Manq, Kraft and Murphy – not coz of injury either.

I liked what I saw against Everton more than even other game so far this season. I’ve said before that I think he finds his balance by going with 3 CBs – we look pretty solid defensively & the 3 CBs generally look very comfortable playing that way.

It’s up to Bruce now to stick with it and tweak it slightly to get the offensive set up right.

But if he keeps changing formation & playing staff, I really don’t know how he can get upset with people questioning him.

    Palace A
    Villa A

We played decent football against Everton, Wham and Everton. I think that is a better start than some we have made. Obviously, I am not going to go all Paul Merson’s Giant Balloon Heed and say Bruce is doing great. He sets us up for a draw or not to be slaughtered. But think back.

Didn’t we have like 3 points after 8 games under Steve “judge me after 10 games” McClaren?

I also think that Rafa had like the worst run at a certain point since Richard Dinnis. Cant be certain, but I think I am right. Also, he manufactured a terrible start in one of his 2 seasons on returning to the PL.

We have been **** under all 3 Managers. The difference is that Bruce has the best squad, but Schteve’s wasnt too bad either. Rafa should have kept us up as well after we added Shelvey and Townsend to the likes of Wijnaldum, Mitro and Sissoko. In my opinion that was the best squad ever to be relegated from the PL.

Surely that will mean he doesnt train. His injury history is with his knees and that is where the current injury is. Sunday to Friday is just too short a recovery period, and the international break gives him another 2 weeks.

Why risk your best player and season for 1 game?

  41. What’s all this about St Max having a bad game on Sunday? He wasnt that bad. He made a few of his signature runs and drew a few fouls. By his own standards he was maybe not stellar and is probably carrying a knock. But by normal footballer standards he was still good. He is getting grief for missing that chance but he tried to chip the keeper who made a very good save. He picked the right option there.

I am also seeing calls for him to be rested and have Fraser start. Is that an either/or? I would love to see Fraser start, but at the expense of St Max? Where does that come from? He has been our best player for a year. Only a couple of weeks ago people were worried the Fat Man might sell him and were putting out numbers like 50 million.

I just dont get Toon fans sometimes.

Eric – there’s a international break after our game so I think if there is any doubt over Ings fitness I’d be surprised if they risk him.
They are about 4th at the mo & 13 points on the board, so they’d be made to risk him for 1 game when he could have a 3 week rest – plus if he doesn’t play they could keep him from going off with England so he can have a good break.

Its a cracking idea – and exactly the kind of thing I would have been expecting the government to be coming up with to tackle the spread of this virus.

The NW have been taking a pounding & Liverpool has been tier 3 for the last 3 weeks – and now face 4 weeks of full lockdown.

If only the government had acted a bit quicker and brought this mass testing in 2 or 3 weeks ago, then maybe they could have avoided this lockdown.

It’s really good that they are doing it, but they are a bit late is all I’m saying.

Good luck to the American people in their vote. It’s a choice between a current president who is a little irregular and certainly an egomaniac and a want to be president who clearly has some age related cognitive issues and in all likelihood may not even see out his first term due to his age. What a very odd choice.

Although I do really like and enjoy the way Trump takes on the press. I wish we had someone who would do that here.

    What a choice!

Boris is a goon mate, but if we had Trump I’d be moving my family as far away as possible!!.

If Farage ever got a sniff at PM I’d be off too!!

  48. Stuart: I have been seeing Trump every day for 4 years and he is crazy and dangerous. Everybody that has ever worked for him that is not his family or a toady have quit, citing that he is unhinged. I actually watched the debates and a few of his Rally speeches. They are the most rambling bunch of nonsense you have ever heard. He is also a racist and misogynist, a liar and a cheat. He believes in conspiracy theories and passes them on and he incites hatred and physical violence in his supporters. In short, he is a horrible human being and the world is better off without him. If he loses he will probably go to jail for tax evasion unless somehow he finds a way to pardon himself.

I have seen no evidence of “cognitive issues” with Biden. If anything, it is Trump who has difficulty stringing a coherent sentence together. Great, terrific, beautiful, tremendous. That’s the full extent of his vocabulary. He is still supporting militia and white supremacist groups and asking AK47 touting goons to watch the polls. He is a race baiting idiot who has caused untold damage to the American way of life and this will continue when he is gone because of his Supreme Court appointments.

You dont see him every day. He is the worst president in the history of this country.

This “fake news” stuff is a joke as well. It is him and the Murdoch organ Fox News who spread the conspiracies and hate speech but somehow he believes it is the other side who have been reporting somewhat impartially for 200 years. I have to admit that after his baiting the regular press have been anti-Trump but that is because he is a lunatic and his views are extremist. He also cozies up to dictators and despots and alienates the US’s allies.

If you dont know that Trump is a lunatic you havent been paying attention or have been getting your news from internet right wing fringe groups or Murdoch.

  50. This could be a landslide as well. Trump was only elected because of the stupid system called the electoral college. Clinton actually won the popular vote by more than 2 million. A lot of people hated Hilary. That is missing from this election but Trump will not go quietly. He is a wannabe dictator and saying he is a “little irregular” as Stuart did is the understatement of the year. It makes me doubt Stuart’s cognitive powers!!!

  51. OK, got that off my chest.

I wonder if Wilson will be called up to the England squad? I hope not, because he could do with a rest. Ings will be missing though so it is possible. If he played for any of the “big 6” he would be picked. I am also a bit surprised France are ignoring St Max.

      (Quote)

  52. Joking apart, I don’t see enough of him to describe him as a misogynist or a racist. People call him a misogynist because of what he’s said in the past while at the same time more than likely have said or heard the same sort of stuff in dressing rooms or in the local pub with their mates. As for the racist – I don’t know. I haven’t heard him say anything that screams racist if I’m being honest but I may have missed them. I know he’s not happy with certain countries in the Middle East due to terrorism and he banned some immigration from certain countries. Not sure that’s due to racism as he’d surely ban all immigration from all Africa… But he is a entertaining president that’s for sure. Bit idiotic however and a complete egotist.

But anyway, I don’t think it’s a good choice. If Biden doesn’t have cognitive issues he’s the only 78 year old I’ve ever seen that doesn’t. Although he thought George Bush was the president, missed Obama introducing him on stage three times, lost his mask (which was in his pocket and then tried to talk into the Mike again after he’d finished… That was in a 2 minute period!

    God help you!

  53. Stuart: there was a white supremacist rally where they were chanting “jews will not replace us” and he said they were “good people”. Very strange indeed considering he has Jewish family members. His organisation was well known for not renting to blacks. He was the leader of the “birther” movement against Obama. You could say that is not overtly racist, but I know better 🙂 There are so many examples but I do not want to bore people.

Honestly, I have seen a lot of Biden during this campaign and he has been very lucid. I disagree with you that ALL 78 year olds show cognitive deterioration. My mother is that age and I dont see it yet even though dementia runs on her side of my family. Have you ever seen Warren Buffet speak? He is like 90 and hasnt lost a step.

Sometimes Biden will ramble on with stories from his past which may make it seem like he is a dodderer. That’s not age though, he was doing the same when he was 50.

Can only assume we didn’t have the testing capacity. However, how on earth can test and trace actually work if 80% of cases asymptotic? The only people who generally get tested are those with symptoms.

Eric, every time I see Biden being introduced to a stage he always runs on. Why does he do that? It makes me laugh. It’s as bad as Trumps dancing.

Stu – well there’s the other fail though because Hanc0ck assured us we’d have antibody testing by now as well – and if they haven’t had capacity before now, why not?!.
They’ve had plenty of time – Hanc0ck declared there’d be over 200k tests a day by the end of April – we’re November now so we should be capable based off their claims.

Listen, it’s good that they seem to have a plan on how to do things a bit better off the back of this lockdown – I’ll leave it there.

We’re testing 500,000 a day! That’s more than any other European country. By all means bash the government but a little perspective wouldn’t go amiss.

  59. Stu, mate. Biden runs precisely because he is 78. He wants to show vigor. He actually does look pretty fit for a 78 year old. Obama used to do the same, bounding up the steps of Air Force 1.

Trump’s dancing is quite funny and so is their choice of music. Pence the Android is even worse. YMCA! They totally miss what that song is about.

Other music they tried to use and have been told they cannot are from Springsteen, CCR, The Rolling Stones and even Elton John. I am guessing Elton John was Rocket Man when Trump called Kim Un “Little Rocket Man” before they became best buds.

      (Quote)

  60. Yeah, they were using “fortunate son” by CCR. Probably the most unfortunate choice of song given Trump’s draft dodging. John Fogerty told them to stop but I would have let them use it because of the irony of a guy who inherited his wealth from his father and had 4 draft deferrals playing that song as an anthem. It is sometimes unfathomable what tin ears his aides have. They obviously have no idea about music.

  64. I would love to know how many closet Trumpers there are. You see all the die hards with their MAGA kit & Trump t-shirts – but I bet there are loads who will vote him coz he will get stuff done, but because they don’t like how he goes about it, they don’t want to admit backing him.

But if he doesn’t get in, I am convinced there will be kick offs over there – and Biden will need a crow bar to get Trump out the White House.

Is it too late to get another couple of candidates… ?

Sharpy, I don’t know exactly but of the half dozen people I know have been tested they got a test the next day and all but one got their results back within 24 hours. That’s pretty good IMO. But I imagine the media can find a few who have had to wait a few days and turn it into the norm…
