Sky Sports’ Keith Downie fears Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson will both miss our clash with Chelsea in two weeks time after suffering hamstring injuries.
The ex-Bournemouth pair appear to have suffered the same issue, with Fraser ruled out before kick-off at Southampton and Wilson having to make way for Andy Carroll late in the second half.
Speaking after Friday night’s horrific display in a 2-0 loss at St Mary’s, Downie reveals that Fraser has already pulled out of the Scotland squad and is a ‘doubt’ for the Chelsea game in a fortnight’s time – fearing Wilson will be in the same boat if he’s suffered the same injury.
Steve Bruce has confirmed that both will have scans, but it doesn’t look great – even if our next game isn’t for another few weeks now.
Wilson’s injury in particular provides a headache to Steve Bruce as it leaves us with only Carroll and Joelinton available to step in – with neither filling the Toon Army with confidence when it comes to finding the back of the net.
Fraser’s setback is frustrating as he has been fighting to regain fitness since the moment he signed in the summer on a free.
Last weekend’s assist from the bench had a lot of supporters hopeful of a starting berth in the lineup at Southampton but a setback prior to kickoff has delayed his chances even further.
Fraser + Wilson = goals. But it looks as though we might have to find them elsewhere against Chelsea!
