On Friday afternoon, I had the pleasure of watching our U-23’s take on Leeds’ second string at Whitley Park.
It was an awful start from our young Mags, with us 0-3 down within half an hour, however the response that followed was outstanding as we completed our comeback in the 90th minute to win 4-3!
A great team effort in the end, but there was one player in black and white that constantly looked a cut above the rest – Elliot Anderson.
The talented No 10 signed a new long-term deal with the club just hours before the game and has recently been called up to train with the senior squad by Steve Bruce.
He bagged a goal and an assist, yet it was his general play that stood out most, with him always looking for the ball and driving through the Leeds midfield with explosive runs on several occasions.
The game came on the day of his 18th birthday and he reminded me a lot of a young Ross Barkley when he first burst onto the scene at Everton.
Whether he had the ball with his back to goal and linked the play or went the other way with driving runs at the Leeds defence, he looked the part throughout – making it easy to see why Steve Bruce has him training with the first team!
Elsewhere, Yannick Toure was a constant threat and real handful, Rodrigo Vilca showed a few clever touches and tight dribbling, with giant centre-back Ludwig Francillette standing out at the back, outshining a certain Paul Dummett!
A great win for our second string on a 18th birthday Elliot Anderson will never forget.
If his performance, new contract and involvement with the senior side is anything to go by, he’s a huge ‘one to watch’ over the coming months!
