Newcastle United cult hero comes back to haunt Sunderland in ‘shock’ win on Wearside

Former Mag James Perch captained League Two side Mansfield Town to a 1-0 victory over the Mackems yesterday, dumping them out of the FA Cup in the FIRST round.

This is the second time in a row that Sunderland have lost in the first round, after suffering a 1-0 defeat last year in extra time of their replay against Gillingham.

The Stags signed the former Toon Army favourite back in August and are currently managed by Nigel Clough, son of legendary manager Brian.

A 49th-minute George Lapslie strike was enough to see Sunderland off on home soil but their focus is clearly on securing a return to the Championship this season.

The Black Cats sit sixth in the League One table as things stand, four points behind leaders Peterborough but with a game in hand.

So, there’ll be no Tyne and Wear derby in the FA Cup this year, but another embarrassing defeat for our rivals down the road might just make that dismal defeat to Southampton a bit easier to swallow!
