NUFC interested in signing Dutch star as Bruce plans to strength problem position – Report

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United are showing interest in PSV right-back Denzel Dumfries.

Lee Ryder reports that club scouts have been keeping a close eye on the Dutch international prior to the latest lockdown, with the 24-year-old described as an ‘ideal signing’ for Steve Bruce.

This comes after he impressed during Holland’s 1-1 draw with Spain last night – a game Steve Bruce is expected to have watched with keen interest given we’ve been ‘monitoring’ the powerful full-back for several months.

The Chronicle report that he was a target of Manchester United’s before they signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and claim we are now one of several Premier League sides showing genuine interest in the PSV captain ahead of the January transfer window.

Although we have seen Manquillo, Krafth, Murphy and Yedlin all feature at some stage this season, it feels like right-back is a problem position for Steve Bruce, with him yet to work out his first choice option 16 months on from landing the job.

Murphy is no longer an option should we move back to a four-man defence, Yedlin will leave next summer if not in January and Krafth hasn’t looked up to it.

Manquillo has done a solid job and remains a good player to have in and around our squad, however Dumfries could give us a different dimension in that area of the field, with him possessing the sort of pace, power (he’s 6ft 2′) and attacking prowess to make it at Premier League level.

He bagged an impressive eight goals and four assists from right-back last season and has already started the new season with four assists in nine appearances in all competitions.
