According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are one of two Premier League sides showing serious interest in Sporting Lisbon wonder kid Nuno Mendes.
The report claims that Leicester City are also keen on the Portugal U-21 star, but state that Newcastle made an enquiry a few months ago – and were quoted a fee of £18m plus add-ons.
The 18-year-old’s release clause is believed to be a whopping £40m, however The Mail report that Sporting Lisbon are likely to accept a significantly lower fee given their current financial issues.
Nuno Mendes began his career as a left-back, but has operated on the left side of midfield over the first nine games of the season, scoring once.
It may be that he was someone we were looking at before we opted to spend £15m on Jamal Lewis, however his ability to play in various positions down the left may be something that appeals – especially when Steve Bruce can’t seem to decide on a formation!
Arsenal have previously been linked with a move for the Sporting Lisbon star, however the report insists that it’s ourselves and Leicester who’ve been showing interest in recent months.
Another name to add to the list as we approach the January transfer window, although I suspect our priorities may lie elsewhere, with a centre-back, midfielder and striker said to be top of Bruce’s wanted list.
