Bruce plans to sign Premier League midfielder ahead of Brighton & Sheffield Utd – Report

The Mirror report that Steve Bruce is hoping to sign another player nearing the end of his contract at Burnley.

After signing Jeff Hendrick over the summer following his release at Turf Moor, John Cross’ ‘exclusive’ claims that we are keen to bring Jack Cork to Newcastle United once his deal expires in 2021.

The Mirror claim that he’ll face competition, however, with Brighton and Sheffield United also said to be in the running.

Cork is a steady player with plenty of experience at Premier League level, but this wouldn’t be a signing that takes us forward or answer our ongoing issues in midfield.

If we’re going to sign any central midfielder over the next transfer window or two it needs to be a box-to-box player capable of imposing himself on games, giving us a physical presence and driving us forward, not a Jack Cork.

If we didn’t sign Hendrick and had lost Matty Longstaff then he may have been a solid addition to the squad, but he’s 31 now and has had his fair share of injury issues recently.

Would you take him next summer if he did become available on a free transfer?
