Abu Dhabi based Bin Zayed Group sign ex-Mag after securing £60m takeover of Derby

One of the many groups that failed to buy NUFC have appointed ex-Toon boss Steve McClaren as technical director of their new club.

The Abu Dhabi based Bin Zayed group, who were linked with a deal for us back in May 2019, have recently bought Championship strugglers Derby and have swooped in to sign the former Rams boss in a recruitment-style role.

McClaren has twice managed Derby, being sacked both times, and the seemingly imminent appointment comes as a surprise considering how ambitious the incoming new owners are supposed to be. That said, he will know the club well and seems to be well liked in those parts.

He will be reunited with former England international Wayne Rooney once again after the Man Utd legend was made player-manager on an interim basis following Phillip Cocu’s dismissal.

With his previous poor history at the club and an unlikely return to an ‘upstairs’ role, this move has something very ‘Joe Kinneary’ about it. He did have some success in his early days with Derby, but his reputation swiftly diminished following his two sackings and constant rumours linking him to NUFC – which angered the Rams fans.

If the Bin Zayed group had purchased Newcastle and their first key decision was to bring McClaren back, you could bet that it would go down like a fart in a space suit!
