Ex-NUFC flop in talks to become Sunderland’s new manager after interview – Report

According to reports today, Sol Campbell is in talks over the current managerial vacancy at Sunderland.

This comes via CaughtOffside, who claim that the former Newcastle United defender was interviewed by Black Cats chiefs yesterday and could hold more talks with the League One club today.

Campbell has had previous spells in the EFL with Macclesfield Town and Southend United, with Sky Sports reporting a few weeks ago that he was in the running for Steve Bruce’s old job at Sheffield Wednesday – only for Tony Pulis to be appointed at Hillsborough.

Sunderland sacked former boss Phil Parkinson last week and currently sit 7th in the third tier after just one win in their last five.

Here’s a list of the bookies favourites prior to reports of an interview for Sol Campbell – the former Arsenal and Spurs star who endured a forgettable season at St James’ Park across 2010/11:

Danny Cowley 4/11

Lee Johnson 5/1

Gus Poyet 6/1

Paul Cook 8/1

Nigel Pearson 16/1

Daniel Stendel 20/1

Kevin Phillips 25/1

Nigel Adkins 25/1

Gareth Ainsworth 25/1

Michael Appleton 25/1
