Newcastle striker could join Premier League club on a free transfer in 2021 – Report

According to The Chronicle, West Brom remain interested in Dwight Gayle and could look to sign him for nothing next summer.

The 30-year-old is entering the final SIX months of his contract at St James’ Park, and it’s reported that a return to The Hawthorn’s could be on the cards should he fail to land a new deal.

The Chronicle insist that Steve Bruce still rates him highly and is eager to keep him at the club, but the it seems the Baggies are eyeing a bargain should we allow his contract to run down.

Gayle enjoyed a prolific spell at West Brom during the 2018/19 season, with his 24 goals helping them reach the play-offs.

Although he’s never reached anywhere near the same heights at Premier League level, he enjoyed one of his best top flight runs during Project Restart, bagging four goals and a few assists across our final eight games of 2019/20.

If Gayle stayed fit, he’d be a handy squad player worthy of a new deal, however injury issues over the past few years have made him anything but reliable.

That said, perhaps an extension would be wise to simply protect his value, with top Championship clubs still likely to pay a fair few million for a striker who’s almost guaranteed to score between 15 and 25 goals in the second tier.
