Saudi Arabia “back in” for Newcastle United…but not via the Public Investment Fund?

A new takeover rumour has arrived from The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards in the last few moments – although he’s advising fans take it with a pinch of salt ‘for now’.

As you can see from his Friday night tweet below, rumour has it that Saudi Arabia are ‘back in’ for Newcastle United – only this time their takeover bid could be through a ‘private individual’, NOT the Public Investment Fund.

Here’s what he’s had to say:

Considering this wouldn’t be a state-backed purchase – something that appeared to hold back the ‘failed’ bid a few months ago – this certainly seems like one way of getting around the tedious Premier League Owners and Directors test IF it proves to be true.

It’s also interesting to hear Edwards say this is a rumour that’s been doing the rounds behind the scenes ‘for a while’, suggesting the Saudis may have been working on a plan B?

We shall see. I don’t think anyone will getting their hopes up, but it’s certainly intriguing…

  1. Luke Edwards knows nothing about any takeover and it’s been clear on everyhing he’s tweeted since the start of this fiasco (so I’ve been told)
