Alan Shearer names NUFC star in Premier League Team of the Week after 2-1 win vs West Brom

Alan Shearer has named Newcastle United’s Isaac Hayden in his Premier League Team of the Week today.

The midfielder put in an outstanding display in our 2-1 win over West Brom on Saturday, being forced to play out of position at centre-back yet barely putting a foot wrong all afternoon.

Not only did he step in at a time of need, with Lascelles, Fernandez and Schar all absent, it emerged after the game that he’d recently been bed-bound for 10 days after contracting Covid!

Here’s Shearer’s team in full:

This comes after BBC pundit Garth Crooks surprised Newcastle fans earlier today by leaving Hayden out of his Team of the Week after including Callum Wilson instead.

Although Wilson put in a valiant effort up top – playing a part in our early opener and leading the line well with a battling display – it is Hayden who was the real man of the match for me.

Playing so well out of position and in the middle of a decimated defence is tough enough as it is, but doing it so soon after he was ill in bed with Covid is just exceptional!
